Working together in a coordinated effort with our state and federal partners we were able to secure funding for debris removal and repair of one of the most vital parts of our community. It meant a lot to us that Governor Baker and members of his staff took the time to visit Nantucket in the Disaster Reinbusement, Planner of the Year, and Nectar Caps http://us8.campaign-archive1.com/?u=bc2c42bcb6cc04d8937a4da58&id=7e3fb9a8ba&e=d8171b4561[3/24/2016 3:12:32 PM] hours immediately following the storm to see the damage first hand. We are extremely grateful to the Commonwealth for facilitating reimbursement for these costs The event was held on December 9 at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Complex (The Bunker) in Framingham. Participants included Governor Baker and representatives from FEMA, MEMA, City of Worcester, City of Boston and Town of Nantucket. The award to Nantucket from FEMA and processed though MEMA was for $844,000 for repairs to the Town Pier, debris removal (post storm) and insurance deductible reimbursements (post insurance settlements). Snow Emergency Parking Ban Just prior to winter storm Juno (January, 2015), we instituted a snow emergency parking ban on certain streets in town so that snow plows and other equipment could more easily access highly trafficked areas for snow and ice clearing. Signs have been installed on the affected streets and shortly we will publish, on-line, the criteria that will be used to determine when the parking ban will be put into effect. The affected streets are difficult to plow due to their width and their parking. Two inches of snow can be problematic on the most narrow of roads making parked cars obstacles to effective snow removal. The map below show streets where a snow emergency parking ban will go into effect when declared. The Board held its annual public hearing on the budget at its January 6, 2016 meeting. The final budget recommendations are contained in the Finance Committee motions to the budget articles at the 2016 Annual Town Meeting. Update from the School Department The Nantucket Intermediate School (grades 3-5) and the Cyrus Peirce Middle School’s overall project is on schedule. The first phase of the project, the construction of the north parking lot and cross campus drive, is nearing completion and should be open for use by the middle of January. This phase includes the relocation of the Sustainable Garden, the relocation of certain playground equipment, and a 177 space parking lot with a hard pack surface, all lighting, conduits for future cameras and the relocation of the fiber optic cable that feeds the current Elementary School. This phase was extremely important to complete on time as the new 3-5 Intermediate school is scheduled to break ground in late January and will be located where the current Elementary School large parking lot is. The general contractor and subcontractor bids went out for bids and Brait Builders Corporation of Marshfield, MA has been selected as our General Contractor. We are eager and very much looking forward to the next phase which will provide desperately needed space for all of our students and staff.
