Special Needs Advisory Council Nantucket, Massachusetts Jessica Douglas, Laura Steele— Co-Chairs Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC)Meeting Minutes November 28,2018 The meeting was called to order at approximately 7:00 PM with 8 people in attendance.The later start time for this meeting gave members an opportunity to attend the first of several superintendent • search committee updates.The meeting was facilitated by Laura Steele.Minutes from the September 19th and October 17th meetings were approved and seconded. Guests Lauren Amendola,Director Community Outreach Autism Speaks,explained her role in providing community resources:tele-learning series;information and support/newly diagnosed; and transition. Upcoming initiatives include a town-hall forum winter 2019 to hear what the needs of the community are especially as they relate to transition services(age 14-22)as well as a workshop on autism insurance. January respite event is planned through Gennifer Costanzo,Nantucket liaison for Autism Speaks. Jill Precopio—Executive Director,New England Chapter Autism Speaks listened to parent concerns about information in regards to resources and services being like a jigsaw pI7.71e;the school has a piece,counseling services another piece,medical providers and other parents having a piece, etc. with no clear path.Parents asked the question;"what are our kids not getting that they are entitled to,need?" Task Force update-provided by Suzanne Fronzuto.First informational meeting scheduled for Monday, January 7,2019 at 6:30 pm to begin the conversation,form the task force and outline next steps. There are organizations that manage housing and client services but what would that look like for Nantucket? The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM. The next SNAC meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16,2019.
