HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-5-7Present: Absent: T OWN tLER.. 2618 DEC J $ Aft 11: 58 Nantucket Commission on Disability Minutes Open Session Monday May 7, 2018 Country Kitchen Room at Sherburne Commons Mickey Rowland, Maribeth Maloney, Georgia Snell, John Malloy, Karenlynn Williams, Jeanette Topham, and Brenda McDonough Guests: Tessandra DeAlberdi, Executive Director of Fairwinds Counseling Center, Leah Kohl, Therapeutic Mentor with Fairwinds, Dawn Hill Holdgate, Member of Select Board, and Ezra Descarfino, Nantucket Resident Call to Order: 3:30 p.m. Agenda: Mr. Rowland stated, by unanimous consent we are adopting the agenda. Note: Mr. Malloy was absent for the Commission's meeting on March 19, 2018, so he was unable to vote on the motion to approve the March 19, 2018 minutes. Minutes: 3:38 p.m. The minutes for March 19, 2018 were approved later in the meeting in the interest of time for our guests. Open Session: 3:32 p.m. Maribeth Maloney arrived New Business: Topics: Fairwinds Counseling Center Tess DeAlberdi, Executive Director of Fairwinds Counseling Center, was invited to our meeting to educate the Commission on all the services that Fairwinds offers to our community. Fairwinds provides comprehensive licensed therapeutic si}pport that fosters mental health through prevention, wellness education, and addiction recovery services. Ms. DeAlberdi spoke in depth regarding all these services. The following is a brief summary of Ms. DeAlberdi's presentation: 9 Fairwinds has been a nonprofit for 65 yesrs. • Their specialty is mental health and substance abuse treatment. • 37 staff members. • 500 people in Fairwinds treatment programs. • The Seconds' Shop proceeds go to Fairwinds that help provide free service for the clients' in -need. • Fairwinds has 2 Psychiatrists every other week and they both work 10 hours each. • There are 14 clinical spaces. • They offer parenting classes and parenting classes for teens. • They work with Family Planning and the Community School. 4:00 p.m. Ms. Holdgate left the meeting. • There is a YouTube video We are Nantucket that shows the diversity of Nantucket's year-round population. • They offer LBGT therapy. • They offer so many services and programs and you can find this information on their website. Please visit the following link receive accurate information. www.fairwindscenter.org 4:28 p.m. Ms. DeAlberdi, Ms. Kohl, and Ms. Descarfino left the meeting. 4:30 p.m. Minutes Approved: Ms. Topham motioned to approve March 19, 2018 minutes, which Ms. Snell seconded and all eligible commissioners voted in favor of this motion. Old Business: Public Comment: Other Business: • Mr. Malloy mentioned that the wheelchairs on the boats are in disrepair. • Ms. Topham suggested relocating the accessible parking space on Center Street closer to the American Seasons Restaurant. Mr. Rowland mentioned that he did not want to lose this accessible parking space in this neighborhood and suggested to leave the space where it currently is. • Ms. Topham also suggested to relocate one of the accessible parking spaces at the intersection of Federal Street and Broad Street because of all the obstacles on the adjacent dirt sidewalk. • Mr. Malloy mentioned once again that there is no lighting on the east side of Straight Wharf from the HyLine to Easy Street. There is one street lamp at the Gazebo. *Topics Not Anticipated 48 Hours in Advance of Meeting: Update: • 6 Amelia Drive received their variance request with the conditions that the Commission requested. • Club Car is installing a wheelchair ramp to their dining room. • The Town is replacing and repairing the bricks on Straight Wharf's sidewalk and crosswalks. Adjournment: 5:08 p.m. Ms. Snell motioned to adjourn Open Session, and enter into Executive Session: G -L, c.30A, Sec. 21(a) Number 1 to review Disable Parking Permit Applications, which reveal confidential information regarding the applicant's disability and health concerns, and not return to Open Session, which Ms. Topham seconded, and Mr. Rowland, Ms. Snell, Ms. Maloney, Mr. Malloy, Ms. Topham, and Ms. Williams voted in favor of this motion.
