HomeMy WebLinkAbout07292015 Mosquito Control Commission MinutesNANTUCKET MOSQUITO CONTROL PROJECT BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Minutes of July 29, 2015 at 3:00 PM Nantucket DPW, 188 Madaket Road, Nantucket MA Commissioners present: Sarah Oktay, Charles Stott and Helene Weld State Reclamation Board Staff: Jennifer Forman Orth DPW staff: Kara Buzanoski Vector Disease Control International: Emily Hibbard Members of the Public: Mark Palmer Chairman Stott called the meeting to order at 3:00 P.M. E. Hibbard reported for VDCI. July has been dry with mostly salt marsh breeding mosquitoes. Marsh flooding – 2 treatments with 2 more anticipated. There has been some container breeding – catch basins are dry. 13 pools tested negative – total of 300. Review motion re: acceptance of contributions – It was agreed to continue the discussion to the next meeting. Access to conservation properties – K. Buzanoski and E. Hibbard have reviewed maps. Dry weather has resulted in no need for treatment. Next year – approach re: potential channeling and ditching – E. Hibbard will check with VDCI to collect data on which locations would benefit from marsh management. State reclamation Board Update – DCR representative has retired. Nantucket mosquito control data – monthly data reports are contracted. A motion was made, seconded and approved to increase VDCI’s contract by up to $3,000 for additional weekly reports. Public education - Chairman Stott presented a draft copy of a tri-fold brochure meant to be distributed to the public. A motion was made, seconded and approved to print 1,500 copies – they will be ready for spring distribution. There will be a news release in the Inquirer & Mirror. Refrigerator magnets and brochures will be distributed on Saturdays at the landfill. Educational information will go out via social media, local TV and radio stations. Brochures will be provided to the hospital, ferries, chamber of commerce and visitors’ services. E. Hibbard spoke with elementary school children in May on self protection procedures. She will speak with the Wauwinet Association in August; will have a table with information at the Nantucket County Fair and has been giving informal talks at the Field Station. Public Comment – None Adjournment – there being no further business to consider, a motion was adopted to adjourn.
