Preliminary Hearings. A representative from Island Haircutting on Pleasant Street discussed a violation notice received for an "open" flag. The SAC discussed enforcement with the applicant and cited the guidelines per the Sign Book. They suggested a projecting sign with a smaller detachable wooden "open" sign. A representative from the Nantucket Historical Association wanted the SAC's feedback on the possible approval for a menu box stating hours of operation for one of their properties on 96 Main Street. This application is scheduled for the July 31, 2018 SAC agenda. 4. Enforcement. Eighteen violation notices were sent out since the last SAC meeting on July 17, 2018. John Hedden notified Chief Pitman via email, of the business using chalkboards which are obstructing sidewalks. He also included the zoning bylaw, chapter 127-3, giving the Nantucket Police Department the authority to remove and issue a $200 fine. At this time, a notice to all the business' in violation will be sent, as a warning. The board discussed the increasing number of chalkboard signs, around the island and agreed it's an on-going problem. The use of rope lights and signs mounted on fences of NIR properties was also mentioned. If a business owner wants to appeal a decision or in disagreement with the guidelines pertaining to signage, they are welcome to attend an HDC meeting. Their concerns will be heard during public comment and possibly put on a future agenda for discussion. Certain signs have been grandfathered in ie, the donut sign at the Downey Flake Restaurant. That sign was originally downtown. A brief discussion about having product on display, as advertising. John Hedden stated that repeat offenders will be receiving additional citations. V.
