BOARD OF APPEALS
NANTUCKET, MASSACHUSETTS 02554
October 15, 1984
Re: PATRICIA WATERHOUSE (055 -84)
Enclosed, please find notice of a decision of the BOARD
OF APPEALS which has this day been filed with the Town
Clerk.
Any appeal from this action shall be made pursuant to
Section 17 of Chapter 40A of the General Laws, and shall
be filed within twenty (20) days after this date.
BOARD OF APPEALS
William R. Sherman, Acting Chairman
TOWN OF NANTUCKET
BOARD OF APPEALS
Nantucket, Massachusetts 02554
DECISION:
At a meeting of the Board of Appeals held Friday, September 28,
1984, in the Town and County Building in the matter of the application of
Patricia A. Waterhouse ( 055 -84) , the Board finds:
1) Applicant has owned the property at Sparks Avenue,
Nantucket, Massachusetts, since 1958 and seeks a Special Permit to operate
a laundromat pursuant to Section 4.c. 2.a. of the Nantucket Zoning By -Law.
The property is located in a Residential - Commercial District and laundromats
are an allowed use upon the issuance of a Special Permit by the Board.
2) The area is a heavily developed and expanding commercial
district with the Fire Station across the street, the First National, two
other retail stores, and the branch office of the Pacific National Bank next
to the Fire Station and two full service automobile repair and filling
stations within 300 feet of the property.
3) The lot in question is serviced by town water and town
sewer which is a necessary appurtenance to this type operation.
4) The Board appreciates the fact that motor vehicle traffic
congestion is a problem in this area but is also cognizant of the fact that
automobile congestion is a problem in all of the commercial districts on
Nantucket. Taking this into account, the Board heard from the Traffic Safety
Advisory Committee before making their decision.
5) The applicant's plan provided off - street parking in accord-
ance with the Nantucket Zoning By -Law and the structures to be built or
renovated will have to be approved by the Historic Districts Commission prior
to the issuance of a building permit.
6) For the reasons set forth above, the Board finds that
the proposed laundromat will not violate the spirit or intent of the Zoning
By -Law and will not be detrimental to the character of the neighborhood as
the area is an ever expanding commercial section of the island. Therefore,
by unanimous vote the Board hereby grants the applicant the requested Special
Permit subject to the following conditions:
a) That vehicular egress and ingress to and from the
property be in accordance with the reccomendations
of the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee already
on file with the Board.
b) The premises shall be screened on all sides by
shrubbery and or hedging.
(055 -84)
Dated:
C) That the hours of operation be from 8:00 A.M.
until 8:00 P.M.
