Discussion
*Discussion about running ad on an issue of public health once a month and cost of
advertising: 1/4 page ad is $120. Health Dept has about $20K to expend before June
30; some of which are earmarked for office needs leaving about $1 OK to spend on
this project. Staff will speak to Finance to encumber some of this funding so it will
extend beyond June 30.
*Tick -borne disease — In general the official numbers for tick -borne diseases went
down, but Lyme disease went up. On problem is that cases are not always reported
from the hospital or physicians. Have four volunteers to help assist island doctors in
reporting the cases. Volunteers are: Helene Weld, RN; Bruce Hopper, MD; and
Tristram Dammin, MD. Sarah Burke, a pre -med student, is willing to help on a
volunteer basis pending any funding we can find. In regards to educational videos,
have a commitment of $2K from a civic assn and looking for more. Local Access
Channel 18 is looking for projects and comes active Monday. Public symposium
could be ready the end of July; but the cost is variable depending on speakers and
related travel expenses. Dr. Qureshi's Health Survey is out of our league at the
moment; Dr. Qureshi is looking for grant money for that.
*Article 68 Education Program — Could slip in how to landscape to minimize ticks.
Nurse Educator from Barnstable willing to come speak at the schools.
*Deer Population aerial survey — Funds are encumbered for that.
Action
Motion that the four individuals named above act as BOH representatives in assisting
physicians report tick -borne diseases.

Last time this was reviewed, it took a considerable amount of time. Have to bring in
transcriber from main land and hire a hearing officer that is agreeable to both parties.

Letter to pharmacies — Sent letters as approved by the board with the chairman's and vice - chairman's
signature; pharmacies have assured their cooperation.
Reminder — Fertilizer regulations for Nantucket first public hearing on June 21 at 4 p.m. 4 Fairgrounds
Road 1 st floor conference room.
Update on construction status at 37 Washington Street — For the time being, construction has been halted.
Changes will occur in that building and its use.
Mr. Ray has chosen to resign as Director of Code Enforcement, which has proven to be too time -
consuming and took away from work for the Health Department. Further information will be available
following the May 23 Board of Selectmen meeting.
Received contact from Martha's Vineyard about a letter sent one year ago to the Division of Fish and
Wildlife concerning Board of Selectmen's request to make changes on behalf of the Board of health to
deer - hunting regulations as they apply to Nantucket. Have heard only through the Vineyard that the letter
has been fast - tracked and looked upon favorably. Martha's Vineyard is asking for a copy of the letter in
the hopes to piggy back with Nantucket asking for relief from the deer hunting regulations.
Department is very busy this time of year. For a number of reasons, there are new food service
establishments which have made alterations to their premises without the benefit of permits. Some fines
have been issued and the department will hold to the policy that no inspection will be done until the
Certificate of Occupancy is issued by the Building Department. Several establishments will not meet
their hoped -for opening dates.
1. MacNab — Need to write a letter to island doctors about what the BOH is planning.
Motion to Adjourn: 4:37 p.m.
