the Application of the NANTUCKET HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION (010-$4),
the BOF-RD f Inds
1. This is an Application for relief by SPECIAL PER-
D1IT urad~:r SECTION 7 (I } (1) (extension of pre-existing nonconform-
ing use} of the ZoninS By-Law in order to build an attached
storage shed for the Museum Shop. The Applicant is unable to
come within the required ground cover ratio. In the alternative,
the-Applicant seeks a VARIANCE fro~;~ the requirements of SECTION
5.1 of the Zoning By-Law(ground cover ratio}, if adequate
relief is not available under SECTION 7(I)(1}. The property
is located at the corner of BROAD AND SOUTH BEACH STREETS and
is zoned COMMERCIAL.
2. The Applicant presently operates a Museum Shop
adjacent to and ancillary to one of Nantucket's most notable
institutions, the Whaling Museum. The Applicant has need of
more storage space for the articles it sells, and such space
is available only by the addition of a small storage area at
the rear of the premises.
3. Based upon a review of the application, plans,
testimony at the Hearing and the favorable recommendation of
the Planning Board, the BOARD finds that the.granting of this
application would not be substantially more detrimental to
the neighborhood than the existing non-conforming use. And it
also, fin~3s that the denial of this application would work an
extreme hardship on the Applicant.
