December 20, 1982
Kevin F. Dale, Esq,
Chairman
Nantucket Board of Appeals
Whaler's Lane
Nantucket, Mass. 02554
Dear Kevin:
We are attaching the requisite records and copies and our
check for $100., to cover costs for reviewing our request
to add to the bed spaces now provided by the existing
Nantucket Sportsman Accommodations, at 56 Union Street.
A slight history appears in order, plus some added explanation.
We began providing accommodations to working students in 1977.
Our official dba is Nantucket Sportsman, registered with l7adeline
Perry, the spring of 1977.
We rent on a seasonal basis only,
The objective of expanding this aspect of our operations at
56 Union Street is to meet an island need, as expressed every
year by the Inquirer and Mirror readers, by various selectmen,
by town leaders, and by the many businessmen and women who
depend upon seasonal, off-island summer help,
Since we began providing these accommodations we have sought
to maintain a low profile in the neighborhood; we have required
little if any police intervention; neighborhood acceptance has
been laudatory; and since we are owner occupied we have kept
a tight rein against drugs, alcohol or other aberrations among
our summer guests.
When we visualized this project we showed the area under question
to Bud Clute, for example, to Donald Oliver, to Bruce Watts,
Ann Killen, Mimi Congdon, Katherine Tripp, Doris Davis, two
attorneys, as well as to Norman Chaleki, Richard Ray and others.
All expressed interest and stated the need for more accommodations.

We are going into a capital expenditure program even now to make
our property even safer and more sanitary. We have consistenly
met all health and safety and fire codes since 1977. Even now we
are currently installing a fire alarm system, as required by the
Nantucket Fire Department and Building Codes. The cost to us is
$6,000. The system will be operational by the end of this month.
The space under question is designed to accommodate 8 - 10 beds
comfortably in a large 1200 square feet space opening out into
a fenced in rear patio. We are also working with Mike Lamb's
men to develop a park-like area in the rear of the building where
the working students can relax, play frisbee, etc. That plus
the patio will make a healthy, safe area for the summer students
we expect to host next year.
The addition will in no way change the structural plans of
the building. It will mean no strain on street parking since our
5,000 square feet building rests on a half acre commercially zoned
land and we have parking front and rear on our property for about
20-25 cars. Most summer working guests use bicycles. Additionally,
there is no strain on our existing facilities since we are
simultaneously cutting back on our current restaurant operations.
We trust you and the Board will look favorably upon our request.
Sincerely yours,
.~
