Perry, 't'own Clcrk BOARD OF P.PPEAL~ Nantucket, Massachusetts Decision: At a meeting of the Board of Appeals held t~?ednesday, June 30, 1982, ~~t the Town and County Building at 3:00 p.m., in the matter of the application of HARRY ~. REID and HELEN P0~^]ELL (018-82) , after due deliberation, the Board found: 1. This is an application for a permit to install a 1 second living unit in a dwelling house at 1 School Street, Nantucket, which is zoned OLD HISTORIC. The~tl apartment would be located in the basement and would; not involve any exterior chanctes in the property. This is another effort to install a~second living unit, or accessory apa~nent, in a residential area. The Applicant is most deserving of consideration and would, obviously, benefit from this additional livin~ space. However, the Board is squarely confronted with the .fact that the Town has consistently voted down various proposals to permit the addition of S apartments in existing dwellings, and until the Town amends its by-law, or is forced to do so by State action, the Board. of Appeals is without power to grant relief, even in the most meritorious cases. 2. For the reasons set forth, the application is DE2dIEDi. ((~ ~ ~~ u~ l`, ~ Cs.~if~.C.~ I conc.'ur with the result reached by'~ie majority as an accurate statement of the ,r~resent Zoning By-Law; however, I deplore the cur- rent situation which leaves this Board pawns less to grant relief in most worthy situations such as this. This addition of secondary living units in large Nantucket houses should be encourage3 and not forbidden. I believe such additions wr~uld be highly beneficial. to the Island's needs .far year-rvur~d housing and would be in keepirx7 with the current law ar~d public policy of_ the State.
