BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS
The Minutes of the Meeting of October 17, 1990 at 7:30 PM. The
Meeting was held in the Selectmen I s Hearing Room, Town and
County Building, Nantucket, MA 02554. All members of the Board
were present. Chairman Grossman called the meeting to order at
7:31 PM.
Report on Solid Waste Issues. DPW Superintendent Jeff willett
reported that the groundwater samples taken at the landfill
resulted in below detectable limits for volatile organic
compounds. Mr. Willett stated that the recycling program was a
I success, however, there was not enough personnel to keep up with
the amount of recyclable material coming in. After some
discussion, Mr. Viera moved to request the Director of Municipal
Finance to look into possible funding for additional position(s)
and to support these positions with the Personnel Board.
Seconded by Mr. Borchert. So voted.
Mr. Willett explained that the current storage facilities for
recyclables is not adequate and that the budget for hauling the
material off-island was also inadequate. Chairman Grossman
stated that Mr. Willett should supply the Finance Director with
estimates for necessary funding.

Request for Establishment of Public Hearinq Date for Proposed
Earth Removal Requlation. Ms. Coombs read the memo from NP&EDC
Chairperson Joan Barnes dated August 29, 1990 recommending
adoption of this regulation. The Board also noted that Mr.
Willett was in favor of the proposed regulation. The Board
generally decided to set a tentative Public Hearing date of
December 12, 1990 at 7:30 PM.
There being no further business before the Board, the Board
voted unanimously to adjourn at 8:01 PM to reopen as the Board
of Selectmen.
