Minutes of July 9, 1986 Meeting
THe meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm by Chairman Cabot: all members
were presnet. Mr. Gardner asked for a moment of silence to pay respect to
the passing of Wendell Howse, former Police Chief and long-time Nantucket
resident.
Mrs. Sevrens then moved approval of the minutes of July 2, 1986: seconded
by Mr. Clute: so voted.
Richard Ray, Inspector of Health, was present to discuss water auality testinq
at the Children's Beach. He explained that, due to the fact that faulty
testing procedures may have been used, the last test performed went awry.
j He does feel, however, that the Lily Pond drain line seems to be the problem
with this location's high counts.
Mr. Ray presented the following test results to the Board for samples tested
July 7, 1986:

Judy Collins asked about the progress on the pipe blocking -- opinion was given
that the pipe should be removed totally to eliminate the bad counts. Anne
Meara apologized to the Board for the unfortunate publicity from the Boston
Herald, and expressed her thanks to the Board and to Mr. Ray for their continued
help with the Beach situation.
Mr. Clute moved to accept the recommendation made by Mr. Ray to grant the
variance request of the Madaket regulations made by Mr. Carl Gewirz, contingent
upon assurance of the location of the new well. Mr. Ray noted that this situa-
tionshould be treated as an emergency, as the well has run dry: seconded by
Mr. Grossman: so voted.

IIMr. David Champoux reviewed his study of the Gypsy Moth problem on Tuckernuck.
IHe noted that the Gypsy Moths have caused the defoliation of 200 acres of
Itrees on Tuckernuck. He noted that the time to take action against these

II.and working with the current studies being done, a solution may be available

Assistance in Solving
Pollution Problem at Childeren~s Beach
Dear Mr. Oliver:
As per our discussion last week with Richard Ray and
yourself the following is our proposdl for immediate
temporary solution to the pollution problem at Children's
Beach. As we have discussed in the past the only permanent
solution is to remove the outfall from Children's Beach anc
divert all flows either to Brant Point or the Harbor. If
you desire we will be happy to give you a proposal to
determine the best permanent solution.
A. Scope of Services
1. Meet with the Health Officer and Superintendent of
Public Works to formulate a water quality testing
program to isolate sources of pollution. All
water quality testing will be performed by the
Town through the Health Officer.
2. Upon receipt of the test results from the Town
evaluate the results and determine possible

costs for temporary remedial measures.
