BOARD OF HEALTH
Minutes of July 2, 1986 Meeting
THe meeting was called to order at 7:32 pm by Chairman Cabot; all members were
present. Mrs. Sevrens noted that the minutes of the meetinq of June 25 lq86
were in order and moved approval as submitted; seconded by Mr. Clute; so voted.
Mr. Edward Walker brough to the attention of the Board his concern that water
,quality testing Erogram currently being offered by Inspector of Health Richard
,Ray presents "unfair competition"; "I should be doing water quality testing";
;"1 would like the Bord ot stop doing it". Mr. Walker noted that he personally
Icollects water samples and that Mr. Ray charges a substantially lower rate. Mr
~alker currently operates a business involved in testing.

~r. Ray stated that neither he nor the Town makes any profit off of the water
esting -- and charges $30.00 for the Barnstable COunty lab to perform the
est -- checks are made to Barnstable COunty -- and $4.00 for air fare to fly
he sample over. The paper work for testing takes about 2 minutes per sample.
he trip to the airport every Tuesday morning, takes abouth 15 minutes. Mr.
ay receives copies of the test results of these samples in his office, thus
ffording him the opportunity to keep close track of "what's happening on the
I'sland". Mr. Ray also noted that he has used and will continue to use Mr.
I alker's services for "bigger" projects which he can't get through the Barnstable
Ounty Lab.

rs. Sevrens noted that Mr. Ray is "doing his job" be performing this service,
nd enchoed the opinion of the BOard, and of Mr. Ray, that it is quite refresh-
ng to be able to provide a service at a low cost to the citizens of Nantucket;
nd as this testing is not mandated by this county, it is the citizens' choice
o whom they take the samples for testing. The BOard chose to take no action
t this time.
R. Ray next up-dated the BOard on the testinq beinq done at the Children's
Two tests have been performed and results given to CLark Engineers for
eview. a third test will be done on July 7, 1986. Depending of these results,

r. Grossman stated that, if CHildren's Beach is closed, a sign should be posted
o include instructions to indicate the availability of the Jetties Beach for
wimming.
