The Board of Health commenced at 7:35 p.m. All members were present.
Minutes of the May 25, 1983 meeting were accepted as typed and reading
of the same was waived on motion from Skip Cabot, seconded by Bud Clute,
so voted.
A letter was received from Richard L. Ray Health Inspector upon a recent
complai~ concerning the storage of hazardous wastes found on the property
of the Nantucket Collaborative located off Old South Road.
He reported that he had observed the location and found nine barrels of
old stored asphalt and spent asphalt oils stored on the site. The barrels
had been in storage for a number of years in a Quonset Hut torn down recently.
The barrels had been punctured by vandals and some of the contents had
leaked into the soil. Test holes were dug and it was determined that there
was no deep penetration of the oils due to the thickness of the oil. Five
feet down.
The Collaborative has been notified by the Health Inspector and the DEQE
Hazardous Waste Division of Boston has been notified. The Collaborative
will clean up the site as soon as transporation can be arranged.
Richard Ray and the DEQE have determined that due to the age of this minor'
spill and its self containment, it does not present an immediate threat to
our ground water. Mr. Ray added that he would continue to monitor the
site to attempt a timely removal.
The Board of Health so noted his report.
Mr. Ray added that he was in receipt of a request by Diane Coombs to
operate a launch to sell fish to boats anchored in the harbor. Said he
was research proper related laws. No problems since the fish will be raw.
Mr. Holdgate asked him to find out from which pier she will be operating.
Cannot operate from Town Pier.
As there was no further business before the Board of Health, Skip Cabot
moved to adjourn, seconded by Bud Clute, so voted. Meeting adjourned at
7:55 p.m.
