Minutes of a meeting of the Board of Appeals, May 16, 1978.
Present were members Holmes, Hyde and Bartsch.
In the matter of the petition of Ann Osmun 007-78: Mr. Robert
Osmun appeared with Mrs. Osmun and "explained to the Board that she
is the owner of property at Siasconset, Nantucket, being a single
family dwelling, "bunk house" and lot of 7386 Sq. ft.Mr. Osmun
stated that the present quarters covered 1286 sq.ft. and that he
desires to add a building of 356 sq. ft. The total building area
with the addition would exceed his allowed ground cover by approx-
imately 65 sq.ft.
Mr. Osmun stated that he requires the addition as a specially
designed living area for his son who is a quadraplegic requiring
a single story, stairless dwelling unit for his personal use and
occupancy. Mr. Osmun stated that the son and a personal companion
would occupy the premises.
Mr. Osmun stated that he has a second floor space in the main
house but that the upstairs is not accessible for the son. He
would otherwise be allowed the expansion under total floor area
requirements of the code.
There were no other persons appearing in favor or in opposition
to the petition.
After due deliberation, the Board found:
The locus is in an area of single family dwelling units located
on small lots with generally greater ground cover than is now
allowed under the code.
The requested addition can be placed on the lot without any
deleterious effect on the neighborhood.
The petitioner does have a unique and great hardship in her
request to provide accomodations for this member of her family and
the situation justifies a variance from the existing provisions of
the code.
On ~otion of Mrs. Bartsch seconded by Mr. Hyde, it was unanimous-
ly voted to grant the petition of Ann Osmun and the variance is
accordingly, GRANTED.
