In the matter of th~ petition of James llerlock, for a variance
from ground cover requirements so as to allow the construction
of 100 sq. ft of addition to an existing home.
Appearing for Mr. Herlock was Mr. John Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert
stated he was a contractor and agent for Hr. Herlock and that he
proposed to add 100 sq. ft. to the Herlock house. The addition
was required to expand the living area for a large family. Mr.

Gilbert stated that there was no other room for expansion on the
lot.

In response to questions from the Board, Mr. Gilbert stated
that the addition would not take the building any closer to an

adjoining owner and for all purposes would be screened from view
. wi th hedges ~

Mr. Robert Epple, Nantucket Building Inspector spoke in favor
of the addition and stated the addition could be accomp1ished
without any inconvenienc~ to the abtltters. He stated the design
was satisfactory and his personal knowledge of the situation was
,such as to justify a favorable opinion.
No other person appeared in favor or opposition.
Aftei due deliberation, the Board found:
1. The addition of 100 sq. ft. was required by the owner
to alleviate a crucial space situation;
.
2. The addition can be accomplished, without detriment or in-,
i
"convenience to the neighborhood and wi thout derogating from the
, intent~of the by-law.
Upon motion ~f Mr. 'Taylor,'seconded by Mrs. Backus,-it.was un-
, animoUSly voted to grant the variance requested and the~variance

is granted.
