A special meeting of the Bo~rd of SelectIaen w~s
held this F~day evening fo~ the put'pose ~f mee~ngMr.
Charles Wheeler of the Department of Conservation,. a~d dis-
cussing Shellfish propagation with him.
Those present ~ere, Representative Barnes,
Selectmen Walter D. Glidden, Hen{~y B. Col$~a~n and I. 'A.
Soverino. Shellfish Inspector, Charles Blount, was also
~present. Others in attsndance were,.NiclT~olas E. No~ton,
Ellison H. Pease, Howard'Barber, Mr. Edo~ard Stackpole,
Joseph Sylvia and Captain Leland S. Topha~m]
Representative ~ Barnes introduced, ~ with approp~iat~
remarks: Mr. ~.Theeler. I~ir. ?fheeler then spoke with'reference
to the shellfish program, and expressed his ernest desire tc
assist Nantucket in every way possible .in its shellfish
propagation work. ~,
M~. %Vheeler~stated he thought it pos sibl$,~and
would do everything %-~ithin his power,, to furnish fifty
bushels of ~oft shell clam seed tO be shipped~in bo×es,~Jnd
on'e±hundred bushel ~6f oualiaug seed, b6th 6f these items to
be shipPed in'the very near future. ~ ~-
M~. ~Whe~Jl~r~adv~sed the Board ti{at he intended,
as Mr. Blount's assista~nt~, to '~-~'rocure s~%mples of several
areas to take back With~ him for analysis. The Chairman the~
a~J~k~d i'~ir~' ?meeler to ke~p~the advantages ,of our geol~ogical
~locati4n in mind when making his tour ~ith Mr. Blount to
determineI if, in his opinion, it w6uld be advisable and
practical ~to ~stablish an experimental st'ation/~n Nantucket
?,~e were advised that this '6o]ning season the order
of deliveries would be reversed, so that those con~nunities
who received no seed in '48 would redeive the first to be
shipped during 19~+9.
The meeting adjourned at 9:45 P. m.
