SPECIAL STATE PRIMARY JANUARY 27, 19&8.
· Pursuant to Warrant the Inhabitants of the Town of 'Nantucket met in
Americah Legion Hall, Tuesday January 27, 19&8 at 7:00 o'clock in the
forenoon to bring in their votes for the Nomination of Candidates1'
of Political Parties for the office SENATOR for the Cape and Plymouth
District to be elected at the Special State Election to be held
February 1~, 19&8.
Instructions to Voters, penalty cards, voting lists, and Specimen .~
Ballots were posted outside the guard rail. Instructions to Voters
and penalty cards were posted inside the booths. The Following Ballot
Clerks were sworn in: Edward P. Tice, Ira W. Appleton, Charles Hi Bloun~
and John J. Driscoll Jr. Wesley A. Fordyce was sworn in as Warden.
The Ballots in two sealed packages said to contain 535 Democratic,
and 1856 Republican Ballots were delivered to the Ballot Clerks and
their receipt taken therefor.
The Ballot Box was then opened for inspection.' It was examined by
Constable Lawrence F. Mooney, Edward P. Tice, Ira W. Appleton~ and
~Wesley A. Fordyce and found to be empty. The Register on the Ballot
Box ~s set at 0000, the box locked and the keys turned over to
Franklin S. Chadwick, constable in charge.
Constable Mooney presented the Warrant for the Special State Primary
to the Town Clerk., who then read the Warrant and at 7:00 A.M. declared
the polls open.
At 5:00 P.M.' the Polls were declared closed. The register on the Ballot
Box was then foun~ to read 206.
The following Tellers were sworn in: James M. Killen, Seddon W. Legg Jr.
Eugene Souza, Charles W. Ellis, Charles E. Swain, John E. Moore Jr,
Norman Wilson,~ Clarence H. Swift, Melvin L. Ray, Philip L. Moore,
Frank W. Ramsdell, Walter J. Royal. ~.
The Ballot's were removed from the Ballot Box, sorted and counted and
found to be REPUBLICAN 186, DEMOCRATIC 20, a total of 206.
The Ballot Clerks at the Gate and at the Ball~t Box counted the names x

The Tellers started counting ahd at Five thirty 5:30 P.M. the following
results were read in open meeting.
