the following January, such an officer shall

'PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION .:~ ~ -.

Pursuant to warrant the inhabitants of~the to~m of Nantucket met in
the Jhmerican L~gion Hall, Washington St.'Tuesday, November 2, 19~8
at 7:00 A.M. to select the candidates for election to the offices
appearing on the ballot .... ~.
'Cards of instructions to voters, penalty cards, voting lists and
specSmen ballots were posted outside the guard rail2.Inst~mctions
to voters and penalty cards were posted in the booths.
The following Ballot Clerks were sworn in: Edward P. Tice, Ira W.
Appleton, John J. Driscoll Jr, and Charles H. Blount. Wesley A.
Fordyce was sworn in as Warden.
The Ballots in 3 packages said to contain 21~8 official ballots were
given to the Ballot Clerks and their receipt taken therefor.
The Ballot box and Emergency ballot box were then opened for public
inspection. They were examined by Franklin S. Chadwick, Ira W. Appletoh
Wesley A. Fordyce, John J. Driscoll~Jr, and Seddon W, Leg~ and found
to be empty. The register on the ballot box was set at 0000, both
boxes locked and the keys thereof turned over to Wendell H. Hqwes,
Constable.
Constable Lawrence F. Mooney presented the Warrant for the Presidential
Election, which was read by the To~ Clerk. At 7:00 A.M. the polls
were declared open.
At 9:17 A.M. - ll:O6 A.M. - i P.M. - and ~ P.M. the register.on the
ballot box standing respectively at 300 - 586 - 809 - ll~2, the ballot
box was opened and the ballots removed to the Emergency Oallot box by
Wendell H. Howes, Edward P. Tice, Charles Clark Coffin, Wesley A.
Fordyce and Charles C. Chadwick.
At ~:55 P.M. the Town Cler~ announced that the polls would close'in
five minutes. ~.
At 5:00 P.M. the polls were declared closed, the register~on the
ballot box then standing at 13~3. '~
The Absentee Ballots were then checked and voted the register then
standing at 1~85.

Daniel L. Harrington, Charles C. Bart, Melvin L. R~y, Jame's M. Killen,
Charles F. O'Neil, George E. Gr'~ues, Albert A. Fee, Charles W. Ellis,
