ANNUAL TOWN MEETING --- ¥~RCH 1, 19&8.
Pursuant to Warrant the Inhabitants of the town of Nantucket met in
the American Legion Hall, ~ at 7:00 A,M. Monday March 1,
19&8.
Wesley A. Fordyce was sworn in as Warden.
Cards of instructions to voters, penalty cards, vo$ing lists and
specimen ballots were posted outside the guard rail. Instructions
to voters and penalty cards were posted in the booths.
The following Ballot Clerks were sworn in: Edward P. Tice, Ira W.
Appleton, John J. Driscoll Jr., and Charles H. Blount.
The Official Ballots in three packages said to contain 2000 Official
Ballots were delivered to the ballot clerks and their receipt taken
therefor. Constable Lawrence F. Mooney presented the Official
Warrant of the Meeting to Moderator Roy E. Sanguinetti.
The Ballotbox and Emergency Ballot box were inspected by Lawrence F.
Mooney, Edward P. Tice, Charles Clark Coffin, and Seddon W. Legg
and found to be empty. The register on the Ballot box was set at
0000 the Ballot box and Emergency Ballot box were locked and the
keys turned over to Charles C. Chadwick, Constable.
At 7:00 A.M. the Moderator called order and read Article #1 of the
Warrant.. Upon motion of Charles C. Chadwick, duly seconded it was
VOTED that the polls clcse at 5:00 P.M. and that when this meeting
adjourn it be until 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, March 2nd. at Dreamland
Theatre.
The Moderator then declarde the polls open and voting statrted at
once.
At 12;25 A.M. the register on the Ballot box standing at 450 the
Ballot box was opened and the ballots r~moved to the Emergency
Ballot box by Lawrence F. Mooney, Constable, Edward P. Tice,
Wesley A. Fordyce and Charles Clark Coffin.
At 5:00 P.M. the polls were declared closed.
The register on the ballot box standing at 1044 the ballot box was
opened by Constable Charles C. Chadwick and the ballots removed.
The following Tellers were sworn in: Frank W. Ramsdell, Walter J.
Royal, Charles E. S~in, Walter D. Glidden,Jr, James M. Killen,
Charles W. Ellis, Irving A.' Soverino, Jr, Eugene Souza, William H.
Winslow, Charles F. Handy, Stewart Mooney, John B. Miller, Stanley
M.'Smith, Ed~rd A. Olderich, John F. McGrady, Seddon W. Legg Jr,
Thomas R. Warren,~Irving T. Bartlett, Roland M. Coffin, C~rles F.
Thurston, Charles W. Rogers, Albert L. Manning, Edward E. Backus,
James C. Andrews, Robert B. Blair, Norman A. Wilson.
The Absentee Ballots were then voted. There were 21 men and 23 womwn,
a total of A4, giving the total of 1088 on the ballot box register.
~The Ballots were sorted and counted and found to be 1OA~ and the
Absentee Ballots 44, a total of 1088.
The Ballot Clerks at the gate and at the ballot box checked their
lists and found 625 men and 463 women voted, a total of 1088.
At 8:30 P.M. the canvass of the votes having been 'completed the
following results were read by the Town Clerk, Charles Clark Coffin.
