Wilson Cash,Dispenser of ~elief Was present informed the Welfare .... ~ '~ ............. ' .... ', . Dept. Board that the Welfare Dept.needs $1689.more to meet the necess- ary expenses to carry through the year. Superintendent Tice informed the Board of the urgency of the Sweeping ' - ' streets ~ . need of $450.more for'the sweeping streets approPriation to carr'~appropriat " through the year',do to the litter of streets by the recent storm ".~ ' Shellfish Warden Blount 'conferred with the board in regard t 'o ' shellfish the recent letter from the Div.of Marine Fisheries which reques- 'I ~lm trees- ted information concerning the extent of Nantucket's efforts in the propagation of shellfish in various island areas. It was voted to request the sum of $3,500.from'the Sta~e with a Similar appropriation guarant~2d by the Town to'match the State' A letter was received from Conrad Chapman with an offer to' give l0 American elm trees to the town which could be shipped at once from a nursary in Fairhaven~Nass. if the Board considered it advisable to do so.lt was voted that the Secretary get in touch with Bassett 'Jones an authority on the planting of brees on Nantucket to see if 'it would be advisable to plant Bhem st .this time.(In a int~'rview with Mr. Jones he was of the opinion. that it would not be prudent to plant the trees at this time'of year due'to winter condibions~haavy winds that would damage the trees,and that e~rly April would be the best time as the season w~uld bh'~n be long enough to have them firmly~rooted before the ~ 'It was voted to wr~te a letterand thank Mr',Chapman for his license to 'Sell wines and ~alt beverages.Voted take usual course' The Board complimented Supt.Tice for the prompt manner in which the s~eets of the town were cleared of tree branches and other litter durin~ and fOllowing the big storm of last week and approved a bill of ~64'.to cover this extra work. kindness in donating the trees,and his interest in Nantucket.~ ..~., Walter C.
