Pursuant to warrant the inhabitants 6f the town of Nantucket met
in the Legion Hall, Washington St. Tuesday, November 18, 19&7 at
7:00 A.M. to select the Candidate for Election to the office of
CONGRSSMAN for the 9th Congressional District to fill the un-
expired term of the late Congressman Charle~ L. Gifford.
Instructions to voters, penalty cards, voting lists and specimen
ballots were posted outside the'guard rail. 'Instructions to
Voters and penalty cards were posted in the booths. The following
..~ ~ Ballot Clerks were sworn in: Edward P. Tice,' Ira W."Appleton,.
Charles H. Blount and Daniel Harrtngton. Wesley A. Fordyce was
sworn in as Warden.
The ballots in one sealed package said to contain 21~0 Official
Ballots waws delivered to the Ballot Clerks and their receipt
taken therefor.
"'The Ballot box was then opened for' inspection. It was examined
by Constable Lawrence F. Mooney, Edward P. Tice, Ira W. Appleton,
and Seddon W. Legg and found to be empty. The register on the ·
Ballot Box was set at 0000, the box locked and the keys turned over
to Lawrence F. Mooney, Constabl~ in charge.~ ~ ·
.~ Constable Mooney presented the Warrant for the Special State
-' Election' to the Town Clerk, who then read· the Warrant and at 7:00
A.M. declared the polls open.
At 5:00 P.M. the Polls were declared closed. The Register. on the
ballot box was then found to read 311.. ~

Ellis, Eugene Souza, Norman Wilson, Clarence H. Swift, Melvin L. Ray,

...:.The Ballots were removed from the ballot box, sorted and counted
and found to be 311. ~'
. The Ballot Clerks at the Gate and at the Ballot Box couhted the names
'checked and found 179 MEN and 132 WOMEN a total of 311 had voted.
The Tellers started coUnting and at 5:30 P.M. the following results
were read in open meeting.

Tree Warden Gardner was' present to request funds for clearing
away damage tO trees by the recent storm (Wednesday).
Mt.Gardner estimated the cost at $500. The Board voted that the
sum Of ~500.be transferred from the Reserve Fund to Tree Dept.Fund

Naval Base 'for the establishment of three target areas; one off
Cuttyhunk Is. ,one in Vineyard So~nd and the third in'Nantucket
SOund; the latter a~ea is described as being one-mile s~uare,
bearing 9,530 yards from the light at the entrance of West Bay,
osterville,off the Cape Shore.
A protest was received from Bassett Jones,of Polpis,against
the practice of parties unknown in dumping refuse in the area opp.
osite the gate at East Quaise.Voted to refer matter to'.Bolice Dept
Lane.
It was voted to have a slow sign painted at b0th'ends~Hillers
-Zn s letter to the Board Ralph H.0sborn,Dire~tor Of the State
Department'of Marine Fisheries, informed that consideration will b~
given the town for monies e~pended for the propagatio~ of the
shellfisheries,provided a cert!fzcate of these expenditures is
filed with the DePartment. It was Voted to'secure the necessary.
