directed to'notify the inhabiters of the Town of Nantucket,
qualified to vote in Town Affairs, to meet st the American
Legion~ Hall in said Nantucket on MONDAY, ~R~ 10, 1947, at
7:30 o'clock in the forenoon, then and there to act on the
following articles:
Article i.
And~on ~Ionday, March 10, to bring in their votes, all on
one ballot, for the following: One Moderator for one year:
Five Selectmen, each for one year; One Town Treasurer for ~ne
year; One Collector of Taxes for one year; One-Town Clerk for
three years; One Sewer Commissioner for three years; One Tree
Warden for one year; Two School Committee members for three
years each; Six Constables, each for one year. The polls
will open at 7:30 o~clock in the morning and may close st 5:00
in the afternoon.
REPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS
OF THE FINANCE CO.V~iTTEE
To the Citizens and Taxpayers:
The Finance'Committee hel'd Public Hear~_ngs the week of
February 17th, 1947, as advertised.
To the Citizens and Property Owners of the Town of Nantucket:
In presenting the following Report, your Committee has
,been confronted with the problems of increased salaries in all
departments, added inorease~ of materials and supplies, as well
o~s added expense of Airport ;¥[aintenance, School Department,
Fire Department, Police Department, necessary for the comfort
and convenience of our increasing Sun~aer population. We have
therefore considered each Article in the Warrant with cons[der-
able thought, believing the following Recommendations to be
liberal and consistent with a p.olicy of fairness ~s to the Ind-
%vidual Taxpayer and slso to our Non-Resident property holders
who carry a substantial percentage of the Tax Burden.
We wish to express our sincere ap~reclation for the co-op-
eration of the Town Officials as well as the Citizens of the
Town in helping this Committee to present this Report for your
cons iderat ion. '
Article

which shall come before this meeting.

To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Town Tress-
urer, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow money from
time to time in anticipation.of the revenue of the financial
year, beginning January 1,~1947,~and to'issue a.note or notes
therefor, payable within one year, and renew any note or uotes
as may De given for a period of less than one year, in ~ccord-
ance with Section 17, Chapter 44, General Laws.

of Ta~es to use all means for collecting the taxes which a

adopted~this year ~s heretofore, ~namely: ~ That the Collector
be paid a sl~ecified 's~lary and ~llowed costs and charges
other than interest collected from delinquents; that the~
Collector be authorized to rose ~.ll'~means for collecting
taxes that a Town Treasurer rosy use when sppointed Collector;
and that interest at the rate of 4% per annum, d~ted from
October 1st, be charged slier November 1st on ~11 unps!d
taxes. :

To see what action the.Town will take in regard to the
police force; the town clock and the~ringing of the bell, ~the
highways, and llghting the streets.
We recommend that the police force, the town clock,

to the Town, can be appropriated at any annu.~l or Spec'isl
Town ~,ieeting ,. or transferred from shy funds without there being
a quorum of not less than one hundred (100) or five per cent
of the registered voters of the To~,n present st the opening
of such meeting. This does not in any way prevent the spending
of monies or the transfer of same when such is provided for
by by-laws in the General Laws of the Co~omonwealth.
If the above is not in the pz~per form that the Secretary
of State,-the Hon. Frederic W. Cook, be requested to pul:. same
in such form to carry out the above purpose and same to become
a By-law if this article is accepted by this Annual Town Meeting.

line of their official'duty, but no salaries whatever to any
