I have asked for t~e portable lighting out-! fit for the last.three'years and the Finance Committee has no~ seen fit to allow this~ We have a Special War Con~ittee~for preparedness on Nantucket. 'They have recommended to me certain things along those lines. In my estimation,.if we should go to war, there are only two things that could be done on Nantucket, fire and injury. We have no manufacturing or any other plants to destroy.~:The only plant would be the Electric Light plant.. If our electric light plant should go out of commission, we would not have heat., a~ most of us have oil burners. So for three years I have asked for a portable out, 182 -, lighting 0ut~tt. Your War Committee recommended to me in' ~": a letter that I send three men to Boston to study the.use of dynamite. 'That I ask for an'appropriation for dynamite to store on Nantucket.~ Went to Boston and got information. Absolutely out. Nobody resorting to d~mamite. They wanted' four tons of foamite and hopper. Madaket dredged its harbor'::,:~ and it did not cost the Town a cent. Tuckernuck pays taxes, but there is no money-spent on'it. The~only,way to get to Tuckernuck from town is from Madaket Harbor. No one Warrens Landing, people use Creek. Dredger did not cost people of Nantucket one cent in 1936. To make s better Job we are asking Town to put up $~500. Which is left. I think people in Madaket are entitled to something.~ ? ~B. Yerxa - I agree with ~r. Nanter 100%. Hull - We are on the Atlantic C°a~t.=~ There' is not a more desirable~or more fitting place for an airport than on the Island of Nantucket, nor is there any project, that will give more work. The Government is building air- ports from Maine to Florida,'and millions of dollars have been appropriated for this purpose. Now air ships are growing 187 in proportion and~size,~and if we~re'to have an airport, we should have~a large airport'to take care.of.,the big ships and the Navy bombers. $188,000 was in a budget in Washington to build an airport on Nantucket. ~ There~are some people who do not want an airport in Nantucket and brought thei~ interest to' bear and we heard no more of it. "In time of Peace pre- pare for War'!. We should~act~to night to:prepare work for th, people~of Nantuckot for now and next winter; The airplane is for your security and progress. Which had you rather have American'planes Dyer Nantucket or Hitler's bombers coming here? I want to say that the passing of Article 68 and 69 means that we go to work and that it means work for'all un- skilled. , ,. ,~ .~I move that Argicle 68 and 69 be adopted~in their entirety for the welfare of Nantucket. :~. ,, Dr. Congdon - What ~r. Hull says sounds very well and ~ want to say that the Finance Committee sat about eight days No one came in and talked about the Mayflower Airport to,us and we had to dig up all our information. I think the air- port is too near the road and wires and that makes,it unde- sirable. ~The field is rough and has to have a lot of work done to it. Estimated to buy it for $1.00, then afterwards to get the Government to put in $50,000 and go ahead with W.P.A. money. Suppose the Gover~nent should decide not to put up the $50,000. ,I understand the Government will not appro- priate any money to pub up any building on the~land. ,~We need a landing field. We talked with some experts that came down here and they said the Nobadeer Airport,was large enough to go ahead with at this time'. If it became hecessary~to get U.S. Bombers · down here all we had to do was to knock the fence down to-':. I wards the west. There is a field where you could put the $50,000. if you get it from the Government. This field has aI hanger and a dwelling house and'two or three buildings alread~ on it., _It is a Land Courted piece of land. Other piece of~ ' land the title is somewhat uncertain as near as we can find out. ,If we should get that land and get it made'into an air- port, we should have to put up hangers and lease it to the Mayflower Line for ten years, i,have heard, from the Civic Aeronautic Society that they have no money set aside for Nantucket. ~Just at this time Nantucket is not ~portant.~ Have put $120,090 at Hyannis and that is all they can do at this time. Seems to me as if we were jumping in the dark. I know there is no money assigned to. Nantucket'at this time. If we get a little money later we have an airport to use this suntmer. Dave Raub told me there were ten to twelve to twenty~ planes, private planes, out at Nobadeer Airport at one time. We need a landing field. .We~have had letters and~telegrams td the Finance Committee from people who come here in the summer, Some of them said quite harsh words.~ Two letters were quite harsh;~, They said they were not.coming to Nantucket in the~ summer~if the taxes were raised. I do not know whether you w~nt these people~or not. ~' ~_ ~ ,'~ :. ,~ ,~, .~ ..... Parker Gray - I did not go before the Finance Com- mittee as I was down:in Washington trying-to get some money for Nantucket. If I had the~selling of Nobadeer AirportI:,,:, would want to sell'it to the Town. I plan to have private 'planes pay for the privilege of landing. It was~voted and money appropr, iated to purchase the land under articles 68 and 69 some,years ago, but'share 16~was Mncertain. ~When I bought that land I bought share 10-11-12-13-14-15 and left-out share 16 as I could not find owner to it. Traced him to San Fran- cisco fire. I want to see Nantucket have an airport, and I have gone ahead and done my share. It will'make work for men on welfare, people want work. Project is surveyed. Dr. Congdon - I would ~u;t like to say about that little inference of Mr. Gray about my selling the Nobadeer Port. The owners of the Nobadeer Airport came to the Select- men and offered the property for sale to Nantucket. No private company had the selling of it. I do not like that little jab there. H.
