STATE ELECTION ~ NOVE~IBER ~, 1946. .'i.~ ~' · ~ . ~
Pursuant to Warrant the Inhabitants of the tov~n of '.
Nantucket met in the Legion Hall, Washington St. Tuesday,
November 6, 1946 at 7:00 A.M. to.select the Candidates for
election to the offices appearing on the ballot.
The cards of instruction to ~oters,Renalty cards, voting
lists and specimen ballots were posted outside the guard
rail. Instructions to voters and penalty cards were posted
in the booths.
The following b~llot clerks were sworn in: Edward .P. Tice,
Ira W.~Appleton, Charles H. Blount, and John J. Drisco~ll.Jr.
The Ballot box and Emergency Ballot box were then opened for
public inspection. They were examined by Archibald Cartwright
Lawrence F. Mooney, Fran~lin S. Chadwick, Alonzo Chase, and
the above listed Ballot Clerks and found to be empty. The.
register on the ballot box was set at 0000, both boxes locked
and the keys thereof turned over to Franklin S. Chadwick,
Constable in charge.

Constable Lawrence F. Mooney presented the Warrant for the
State Election to the town Clerk, Charles Clark Coffin.
Upon motion of Mr. Cartwright, duly seconded it was VOTED
that the reading of the Official Warrant be dispensed with
and that the polls close at 8:00 P.M.
At 7:00 A. M. the Town Clerk declared the Polls open ahd
Voting started at once.
Edward P. Tice was sworn in as Warden to act in the case of
absence of the Town Clerk.
The Ballot box was opened and ballots removed to.the Emergen
Ballot box by Franklin S. Chadwick, Edward P. Tice, Charles
H. Blount, and Charles Clark Coffin three times during the
day, the meter readings being respectively 206-396- 816.
Three.times during the day the ballot box jammed and had to
be cleard~. Three extra numbers were rung up in the process
of clearing the box.
At 4:88 P.~. the Town Clerk announced that the Polls woUld
close in five minutes.
At 8:00 P.N. the polls were declared closed, the register on
the Ballot box standing at 934.
The Absentee ballots were then checked and voted'the registeh
then standing at 979.

cmzens sixty-nye years oF age or over in need of relief or support, who shall
have resided in the Commonwealth not less than five years immediately pre-
ceding the date of application for such pension, and who shall h~e resiaeh in
the Commonwealth continuously for one year. immediately ~recediha said date

',.- The measure, by amendments of General'Laws (Tar. ~d.)~ o. 6, provides for
an old ag~ pension commission of three persons, one robe n qualified physician~
another to be an attorney at law and a third to be a non-professional person~
who are to be' appointed/md may be removed for cause by the Governor with
the advice and consent of the Council, and are to serve uude'r, the Governor and
Council. Not more than two members'of gaid Commission shall be members of
the same political.party. Original appointments of members shall be for ~ne,
two and three years respectively, and thereafter appointments are.to be for
three yearS. Such members are to devote their whole time to the work of the
Commission during busine~ss hours and be engaged in no other.business, occu-'
.p. atio..n or pmfessio, n.. On.e'er their nUmber is.to be designated as chairman by
me ~overnor ana snail receive a salary of $6,000~ and each othei member
$5,500 per yekr, with their necessary expenses. The commission is empowered
to make and enforce rules and regulation~ as it may deem nicessary in the
performance of its duties and as may be approved by the Governor and Council.

after provided, shall be at the rate of not less than $48.00 monthly. The pen-
siouer's budget at such times as may be required shall include medical care,

It is provided that General Laws (Tar. l~.d,), c. 273~ § 20, which relates to
the support of parents by children, shall not apply when parents are eligible
to. receive a pension. '
