March 8, 1944.
Pursuant to Warrant the Inhabitants~of the Town met in
the American Legion Hall, March 6, 1944 at V:00 A. M.
Cards of instructions to v°ters,~penalty cards, voting
lists, and specimen ballots were posted outside the
guard rail. Instructions to voters and penalty cards
were posted in the booths.
The following Ballot Clerks were'sworn in:~ John J.
.Driscoll Jr, Edward P. Tice, Ira W. Appleton, and
William H. Barrett.
Wesley A. Fordyce was sworn in as Warden.
The Official Ballots in two packages'said to contain a
total of 2050 ballots were delivered to the Ballot Clerks
and their receipt taken therefore.
Constable Lawrence F. Mooney presented the Official
Warrant of the meeting to Town Clerk, Charles Clsrk Coffi~.
The ballot box was inspected by'Lawrence F; Mooney,
Edward P. Tice, Wesley A. Fordyce, Herbert P. Smith,
Archibald Cartwright, and Charles Clark Coffin and found
to be empty. The register on the ballot box was set at
0000, the ballot box locked arid the keys turned over to
Lawrence F. Mooney, constable.
At 7:00 A.M. the Town Clerk called order and read the
official warrant.
Upon motion of Wesley'A. Fordyce, duly second~d, it was
VOTED that the polls close at 5:00 P.~!. and that when
this meeting adjourn it b~)until V:30 P.M. Tuesday, March
Vth, at Dreamland Theatre.
The Town Clerk then declared the polls open and voting
started at once.
At 4:55 P.M. the Town Clerk de61~red the polls would
close in five minutes. At 5:00 P.E. the-polls were
declared closed. People inside the guard rail-were givsn
ten ~minutes in which to complete and cast their ballots.

The Absentee Ballots were then voted. There were 34
men and 33 women, a total df 67, giving the total of 689
on the ballot box register.
'The official.ballots were sorted and counted and fdund
to be 622.and the Absentee Ballots 67, a total of 689.
The ballot clerks at the gate and at the ballot box'
checked their lists and found 388 men and 301 women voted
a total of 689.
At 8:00 P.M. the canvas of the votes having been comple

'think that~all the Town employees'should be raised to
fifteen percent. 'The State has granted it~to all
State and County officials and I think the'Town of
Nantucke should grant it to Town Employees. We all
know the cost of living in the last two years has ad-~
" v~nCed greatly.'-Many people,have been working for th~
- · -same salary for years, particularly school teachers

that some increase was justified for Town'officials.

going'to pack this-Town Meeting tonight and put it through.

year, possibly some more next year if it Seems advisable,
we can smooth it along.. We have a particular, obligation

Living today isn!t what it was a few'years ago.' Food,
rent, everything you want to'get has gone up. We have
to get more~pay to pay our bills.
Mr. Hill: ~ "M~ Msderator, I-think that this ought~to be thought
over'pretty.carefully. The Town has appointed a Finance
Committe of nine representatiye men who have given many
days and hours to this work and have heard all sides of

the question.' This i~crease would increase the Town
Tax rate. That is'one of the best advertisements
~ Nantucket has.~' This'increase whic~ is asked for isJ
for a limited number~ There'are fourteen~Town Offi-
cials in the Town plus the school"teachers.~ For that
small number there are 2,000 of us who will'have our
taxes increased to pay them. We have the increased
'costs of living as they do but our income is'not in-
creased; it is decreased. I think the~2,000, or whal
ever it is,'of the taxpapers should be considered. I
-~ ~ certainly hope that the taxpapers will consider this
increase will increase our rate from one to two
dollars a hundred. 'I t will be hard on many and on
me to pay; that I know. I trust they will take that
carefully into consideration .... If you raise the
~salaries of,these people you are going to raise ever -
thing in proportion. The Finance Committee is an
honorable board and they have given you an honorable
report." ~ ~ .
Mr. Fisher: "I hope my amendment will stand. It is a proper amendment."

false'in, salaries, was granted that'our tax rate would
go up one to two dollars a hundred. I think he made

school Committee has been obliged'to secure help from

Departments because I feel, as the rsst of my colleagues
feel, that'we'all look to the future. In every.other.
community .... there is some sort of retirement or pen;
sion fund which gives the men a pensiSn when'they have
..arrived at an age when they can no longer work after hav-
ing served faithfully for twenty-five~ears~or more as

i~ for a salary of fifty dollars for the Forest Warden
'~ and the other Article calls for fifty dollars for the In-
spector of Petroleum.. The~e may be a little confusion in
your minds. I~want to say that they are not cennected with
the Chief of the Fire Department in any way. Any quali-
fled man can'hold the office of Forest Warden and Inspecto~
of Petroleu~;;.The late Eben Francis was Forest Warden for
some years....before Nantucke preferred to have a man con-
nected with the Fire Department' hold the office. I ac-

but why can't the Gover~ent do it? ~y.must,we pay for
the condition they are makinE so bad? "It is' so bad be-

I am as patriotic as anyone else but I do not see why we
should pay for it. It is up to the Gover~ent.,.'
Ir. Topham:- "As I ~derstand it, this'is a NantUcket'Co~ty road
that needs' fixing. 'Very t~ue,'it'has been used by the
Gover~ent, but I do not think the Gover~ent should be
called on to pay fo~ it."
'Glidden: "That road has b&en very impassable.' It has ~l-
'ways been a mud-hole. / It is the Town's road and I
second the motion and hope the motion will be carried
Mr. True: "We definitely felt that, the Government,should
have gone ahead and fi~ed"up'"the road...and ,~hat .the
