REQUEST
LETTER
A Special Meeting of the~oard of oelectmen was called
for the purpose of meeting With Mr. Barnes the Biologist of
the State Div. of Marine Fisheries.
Mr. ~arnes s~oke concerning the breeding of lobsters and
of closing our harbor to lobster fishing for this p~.rpose
with the exception 'of maybe a month, November or October, in
his opinion, in doing this, we may always be able to get short
lobsters sent to us. He asks that a letter be sent stating
that' such a plan would be beneficial to our lobster fishing
Industry. In Mr. ~arnes opinion Sachetcha Pond will be
excellent for the raising of clams, oysters and scallops if
some water can be kept flowing. He suggests that a large
36" pipe be laid through the beach and be cemented down.
He would like the StaTe Engineer to look at same for their
approval. The cost be' borne by both the State'and the Town.
He suggested that a letter be sent to the Dept. of Public
Works and YVa~er Division asking that an Engineer come to the
Island and survey the same, and to help with plans for
keeping the Pond'open. Mr. Barnes stated that soft shell
clams were difficult to get because there were no diggers, and
would cost about $2'.00 a bushel. .klr. Tarvis expressed himself
as favoring securing hard shell clams to put back in. closed
~ueas.
