Pursuant to warrant the inhabitants 0f the ~own of
Nantucket met in the American Legion Hall, ~%esday,
November 3, 1942 at 8:00 in the forenoon for the ,State
.Elect~on. ' ~ :, --

~lists, specimen ballots and'referendums werer posted
'outside the guard rail. -Instructions to voters,~penalty
cards,.and copies of referendums were.posted in the booth
The following ballot clerks were sworn in: William H.
Barrett, John J. Driscoll Jr., Edward P. Tice, John E.
~oore Jr., Ira.W. ApPleton,~Nelson~0.~Dunham..
The ballots in two packages said to contain 2484 ballot
were.delivered to the ballot clerks and their receipt
taken therefor.
~he ballot box, and emergency ballot box were then
opened for public inspection. They were examined by
~-Edward P.'.Tice, John E. ~oore Jr., Lawrence~F. ~ooney,
Charles Clark Coffin end Wesley A. Fordyce and found to
be empty. The register was set at 0000, the ballot box
and emergency ballot box locked and the keys thereof
turned over to Lawrence F. ~ioone~, Constable in charge
Constable Lawrence F. Mooney presented the warrant for
the election. Upon'a motion of Edward P. Tice, duly
seconded it was voted that the reading of the questions
on the warrant be waived and that the clerk refer to them
by number and name. The warrant was then read by Charles
Clark Cof£in, Town Clerk. '
~ At 6:00 in the forenoon Charles Clark Coffin, 'town
clerk, declared the polls open.

At 8.00 A.N. Wesley A. Fordyce was sworn in as a Wa~de
At ll:10 the ballot box jammed and was opened by
Constable Franklin S. Chadwick in the presence of the
ballot clerks,.the stuck ballot cleared undamaged and th~
box again locked
At 12:00 noon the register on the ballot box'standing
at 423 the ballot box and emergency ballot box were
unlocked by Constable Franklin S, Chadwick in the presen¢
of Wesley A. Fordyce, Charles Clark Coffin, and William H
Barrett. The ballots were removed and placed in the.
Emergency ballot box, both boxes were then locked and
voting resumed.
At 3:18 P.I~.' the register standing at 863 ~he ballot
box was again opened by Constable Charles C.,Chadwick, ,
in the presence of Charles Clark Coffin, Everett V. Lamb,
John E.~Moore~Jr. and the ballots removed and placed in
the emergency ballot box. Both boxes were again locked
and voting resumed.
During the late afternoon the ballot box again jammed
but~the ballot was cleared undamaged without unlocking
the ballot box.
hadIt was estimated that the register on the ballot box
rung up two extra numbers on the two occasions that
it ja~med.
woul~t 8:25 P.M. the Clerk announced that the polls
close in five minutes. People inside the rail
were advised that they would have ten minutes after the
closing of the polls in which to complete and cast their
ballots. At 5:30 P.M. the polls were declared closed by
Charles Cla~k Coffin, Town Clerk. The register standing
at 1078.

The ballots from the ballot box and emergency ballot box
were sorted and counted and found to be 1076.. ~e Absentee
ballots counted and found to be 86, a total .of 1142.
The ballot clerks ,at the gate and the ballot box counted
t~e names checked on the voting lists and found:

LAW PROPOSED BY INITIATIVE PETITION.
Shall the proposed measure which provides that~the~present
statutes which make it a crime punishable~by fine or imprisonment
knowingly to advertise, print, distribute or circulate any
matter containing reference to any person from whom~or place
where any drug, instrument or means whatever, or any advise
or information may be obtained, for the purpose of preventing
pregnancy, or to sell, lend, give away, exhibit, offer or
advertise any drug, medicine, instrument or other article
for~the prevention of conception, or to write or print
information of any kind statAng when, where, how, of whom,
or by what means such article can be obtained, or.to
manufacture or make such article, shall not apply to'
treatment or prescription given to married~persons for protection
of life or health by or under the direction of registered
physicians not.to teaching in chartered medical schools nor
to publication or sale of medical treatises or journals, which
was disapproved in the House of Representatives by a vote of
77 in the affirmative and 133 in the negative and in the
Senate by a vote of 18 in the affirmative and 18 in the
negative, be approved? .... ·

To,obtain a full expression of opinion, voters should vote
on all three of the following questions:-
(a) If a voter desires to permit the sale in ~this city (or town)
of any and all alcoholic beverages to be drunk on and off the
premises where sold, he will vote "YES" on all three questions.
(b) If he desires to permit the sale herein of wines and malt
beverages only to be drunk on and off the premises where sold
he will vote "NO" on question one, "YES" on question two and
"NO" on question three.
.(c).If he.desires to permit the sale herein of all alcoholic
beverages'but only~ in packages, so called, not to be drunk
on the premises where sold, he will vote "NO" on questions
one and two and "YES" on question three.
(d) If he desires to-permit the sale herein of wines and malt
beverages to be drunk on and off the premises where sold and
in addition other alcoholic ~beverages but only in packages
so called, not to be drunk on the premises where sold, he
will vote "NO" on question one and "YES" on questions two
and three
(e) If he desires to prohibit the sale herein of any and all
alcoholic beverages whether to be drunk on or off the premises
