HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-09-23Selectmens Meeting 23 'Sept,. 1959 ' The meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all members of the Board , being present. Warrant No. 38 totalling $18,759.45 was presented by' Town Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mr. William Burdick'was present and asked for reconsideration of the matter of rehiring him for the job of, street sweeper. ,. The~Board discussed this matter later' in the meeting ,and took no' action on tile request. Shellfish Warden Francis was present and repo~ted on the moving of seed quahogs from great point area displayed some very small seed which he-stated had been found and moved.'Sugg- ested that there was also some Oyster seed in the area which should be moved and the Board approved same. The matter of an open season for the taking of soft shell Clams was disucssed and it was voted to open the. season .on Sundays during the month of October, limit one ten qt. pail per license the only closed area to be south of the ~ bridge in Hither creek. ~ ' Mr. Louis Davidsoh was ,present as a visitor and suggested that the shutting down of the Rail service should be protested ~by, all citizens by writing to their congressman and rep- resentatives. CmdJ. Stevenson and Edgar Lindstrom in behalf of the Boy Scouts were~ present to ask about available space for the use of the Scouts, as the town has no,suitable space available the minute various suggestio.ns were made. ¥ Approval was granted' to Mr.' Edwin Scully for a 2 week vacation starting 12 October. 1959. Approval was granted of the pasteurization permit and permit to sell raw and pasteurized milk by Sunney Acres Dairy Farm/ Inspector ~amb having reported premises were in order with 'the exception or.screens, voted note with license that pre- mises should be screened. Cival Service approval forms for a clerk, temporary-in the Dist. Attys office at New B~dford were ~ approved and sign~ed.~ The Board was~,~.in receiptof a letterfrom<the U.S.COast Guard in Prov.'R.I. relative to the SS Nantucket stating that the vessell had reacently been inspected by them and found'a safe vessell for her service. ~ ZA letter from the DPH relative to an inspection of the harbor and the childrens beach area as to'pollution and its fitness for swimming, stated that some buildings still emptied · seweage into the harbor as well as the steamer,and small boats, stated steps should be taken to'correct this matter and that in their opinion~ the area was~not fit for swimming. The Islander Inc. was granted a permit to'sell pre-wrapped sand2~ wicbes at its place of business Wash. St. Town. Mr. Killen advised that David Worth had evidenced i~terest in ~he post of O.D. Director and would submit a letter in same. The Boa~ discussed the matter of ~he chiid~en:of~one"RoBe'r~ Lyons and his apparant failure to~provlde adequate clothes and medical a~tentSon and it was voted ~o write a letter to Chief Howes requesting him to talk with L~ons and call these matters to his attentSon. ~ ~ Matter of dfimp at Wauwinet was disccssed and voted ~'to r~ques~ opinion of Town Counsel on our ,control of private dumping.
