The meeting came to'order at 8PM all membeks Of the Board being
Warrant No. 30 totalling-S14,946'.46 ~as presented by Town Acct.
Barret, t 'and checked and approved by the Board.
Minutes ,of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Mr. W. hipley Nelson of the Civic League was present and outlined
the program being carried out.by the league in making a
pollen count and asked that the Board is, sue ,a proclamation
asking .the cooperation of all citizens in this matter and
that same be carried in the local papers. Also asked that
the Board contact the state DPW relative to obtaineng ass-
istance in spraying the state highway. It was voted to
approved these' request and to ask the local papers to carry
the said proclamation.~
Mr. Joseph Burgess was present and presented a lette~ outlining
the condition 6f New Mill-street and requesting that the
ruts be filled or the road graded. This matter was referred
to the Supt. of streets for attention.
Chief Bartlett of'the Pire Dept. was present and outlined for
the Board the problems with getting ,the ladder truck approve,
for operation, stated that same could not pass inspection '
~and.that the Reg. had'ordered same off the road. Chief Bar-
tlett stated that the brakes on this vehicle were no diff-
erent now than they had ever been, that he had had various.
local mechanics look at same and that the only suggeston
that ,could be offered was to install a type of brake on the
driveshaft cost estimated at about 3000 . Chief Bartlett
a'lso stated that he had ¢ontaced Amer. LaFrance and they
advised that before the war ~they had offered a front wheel
unit.to make these vehicles four wheel ~ but that same
was no longer available. This matter was discussed at length
and various suggestions made:' suggested .that'the.chief
determine the cost of a truck chassis that could be equipped
with aluminimum~laddrs and other rescue equipment-and use
in place~of,,the ladder truck. ~Also that we wr~te ,to Rep.
Mooney'requesting that he contact the Reg. of mtr. Vehicles
and attempt to obtain a temporary authorization,for this
vehicle. Under Art. 66 it was voted to authorize the chief
to 'dispose of the two old ~D upumps one at quidnet and one
~t the Island Se~ivce wharf which the chief advised were '
in poor repair and not worth fixing, and also oather misc.,
equipment, at the station.
On art 71 waterproffing'of the centr~al station it was vc~ted
to adv. ~,for bids same to be in next week the 5th
On Art. ~70 new hose it was voted to authorize th~ ~hief'to
solicit,bids returnable to the board.
Mr. Paul Klingelf~ss of the White Elephant Ho~el Was present ~nd
commented on newspaper articles attributed to Chief Bartlett
that various local hotels were fire.traps, stated that we
all paid:the Chiefs salary and that same was pretty poor

A letter was £eceived from Mr's Chs. Cahoon thanking the Board for
the sign on Union Street.
A letter was ,received from Mr. and Mrs Sidney Killen lessees of
the Jetties Beach requesting tha~ their present lease -
be re-negOtiated to expire not ~¢than 1968. Same was
voted referred to the Town counsel for h~s opinion on the
Boards authority.
Selectmens Meeting 29 Ju1~-:1959;
Pole loc~tions on Milestone road near the Sc0nset pumping Station
were approved, 'notices having been sent/abutters and no ob-,
jections having been received. ~ - , ,~
On request ~f-Mr.~'Lav~rence Mil]'er approval was give~' of the'in-
stallation of'a higher power street, light in the ,Beach St.
_ ,~ area near the sidewalk cafe and the shops 'of Stinchfield
andfRuth Cha~non. ,. ~
Letters from Mr., Clement Reynolds relative to the information ~
bureau were forwarded to the Public relations commiftee.
Mr. Michael ~ Meyers Naval Facility was 'granted a permi~ for a
dance at the Dias Skating Rink on Friday from 8 till'l.
The following matters were* referred to the highway dept. four
attention; Cut, grass sidewalk lower Orange St.;,Sconset_
Fire dept. no parking area across street from entrance into
Sconset Station. Sidewalk Main street near Sears Roebuck
needs attention. Sidewalk Broad street near Irene Walsh '
Shbp cement heads attention.
The matter of a t~ee in the yard,of Mr. Petumenous on Centek
street which has Dutch Elm was discussed the Board receiving
, a request from Miss Esther Gibbs asking if this work could
,be delayed until-after Labor Day so as not to interfere
with her~business. Voted to so request the Tree Commission.
There being no further business the board went into executive
session and ajd. at 10.45 PM.
