HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-07-08selectmens Meeting; 8 July 1959 ',~ The meeting came"to order at 8.30 PM having been preceeded by a county commissioners me,e%ing, all members of the Board 3 being present. Warrant No. 27, totallin~ $64,671.71 was presented by Town Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board. Minutes of the previous m~eting were'read and~approved. Mr. Parker Gray was present and requested oongideration of a street light near his place of business on Fairgrounds road. Inasmuch as'there are no other lights on this street it was voted to determine the'cost of same. Mr. Gray also requested permission to have his dining room stay open ,an additional half hour. The Board discussed this matter but took no actibn on same. In the matter of the application of Manuel'J. Perry et al for-~ a common vici all alcoholic license at premises on Bartlett, Road, a letter from Mrs Wm. Reith and three petitions pro- testing same were read and noted' Later in the meeting the Board after considering all the aspects of this matter voted to approve said license on the condition that the entrance and exit to the premises would be at the end of the property nearest Surfside Road, that parking would be in the rear and that the petitioners would maintain a fence on Bartlett Rd. son that entrance and exit could only be at the designated place and further that they would agree next season to move or construct a bldg. on the lot at a distance well rmoved ' from the road. A letter.was received from j. Bll~ington stating that the sign' at Quaker Rd' and Main st' needed painting and.that'a stone near the corner of a distance relative had tipped over and needed straighting.~Ii was voted to refer this matter to the Highway dept. and Mr. Burchell who takes care of cemetery lot The'application'of Alexander Stoia Jr. for a permit to serve coffee and pasterys in'th~ rear yard of the Cockeyed Dove;- on Liberty St; was again before the Board and it being under- stood that Mr. Stoia was not pursuing the matter was voted denied., Applications.for pole locations on Hallowell Lane andGosnold Road were'received,and date for hearing'set for 22 July the Secy to first deter'mine if these were laid out-roads. ~ ~ ~ Contracnts for the maintenance of, the~tate highway for the , next six months~were received and signed by the Board.~ Secy.~Glidden advised'for Mr. Pope df the tree commission that two men from the state division of conservation were down and had gone over the area which had been defoliated ~off the Madaket road and that the two'inse~cts~causing same were the tussock moth and the leaf roller, they had stated~that it would serve no purpose to spray at this time as the in- scests were getting out of the~catapiller state'and into the moth stage but that we should'plan to'spray for them early' next season. The state men advised Mr.~ Pope that they would* plan the program for him, and give him costg'ect, and would come down t~ supervice th? actual sp~aying. < A~letter was'~'ceived rom Mr~ Cecil-Richrod requesting that', ~cement guard posts be erected on Sparks Ave, at the corner wher~ the car went off the road and it was voted to approve same. The DA~ wis gran~'~d permit 'to Sell' tickets on Main 'street. Mr. Robert Backus"of the Steamship 'Authority and Mr. John Golden ~ of the Chamber of .Commerce were present to discuss-with 'Board proposed winter shc. of the steamboats" Two sch. were discussed one which would have a boat in and out on S~n. Mon. Wed.' and Friday and which it is estimated would.save 109,000' dollars and~the other which would have a boat in here on Mon. out on Tues, in on Wed.~ out on Th~r.'in of Fri and out on Sat with no Sunday boat and which would save an estimated 134,000 dollars. It was our feeling that we would be in favor of~ the second alternative but only on condition that all'other' ports were cut proPortionally.
