HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-05-13Selectmen~ Meeting 13, May 1~59 The meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all members of the Board except Ch.' Pease being present. Mr. Barrett served as "Ch. Pro Tem. .- Minutes of the previous meeting were read' and appro'ved. Warrant No. 19,.totalling $34,710.18 was presented by Town ~cct. Barrett and checked and approved by,the Board. Mr. John Golden and Robert Hardy were presen~ and' reported on thei~ attendance as observers at the meeting held in Hyannis of the committee from various communities sugg~ste by the Vineyard Board of Selectmen, presented a press release,showing organization etc. pointed out that next meeting,ison the 21st of May and that one of the suggestio~ of the 1st meeting was to see if the various communities ,. would appropriate the sum of $250.00 each for disbursement,' 'of this committee. The £olloWing bids relative to printing for the 300th Birthday Committee were opened and read: Town Crier Inq & Mir: Printing 20,000.schedule of events 104.00 192.00 PrintingS300 books tickets etc. 29.50 42.00 all as specified by the 300th committee, Same was voted awarded to the lowest bidder the Nant. Town Crier. Bids under Art. 30 annual warrant, relative to cleaning beaches and collecting beach' rubbish .were opened as follows: Gilbert Burchell Jr. 2500.00 Charles F. Davis'~.200.00 The Board took'this matter under advisement and later in the meeting voted to write each of the ,bidders and request that they advise us in writing for,next meeting the number of men they .would having working on this job i~ awarded, their names and to furnish us with a schedule as to how they would handle the various-jobs. 7 ~ Bids on the furnishing of a Maytag washer for Our Island Home were received as follows: Wm. Waine and Sons 199.95 and Marine Lumber 'Co. 189.95 same was awarded the lowest bidder the Marine Lumber Co. A letter was received from the Gen. Set. Adm. relative to our. inquiry as to obtaining Surfside Lifestation for an Hist. exhibit and advising that since the property was acquired -, after 1900 same could not be turned over to the town for this purpose at'no cost. In discussing this matter it was the opinion that the station was older than that and it was suggested we take this matter up further with a Mr. Buckley of the G$Lt which the letter advised was coming to the island soon on this matter. A letter was received from Robert E. Deeley suggesting thaf the .old gas light post on Federal street be rehabilitated and set up in the Veterans Plaque area as a perpetual light and stating that he had contacted various organizations ,, Island Service, Co.~ Wm. Waine and Sons and-the Gas &Elec. Co. and that same would be done at no cost to the town. Voted that same be approved. The Inquirer and Mirror'Publ Co. invited the Board and their ladies to a dinner at the Sea Cliff on 29 May in connectio~ with the Press Asso Conference bei-ng held that week end. and same was accepted with thanks. The Board'appr0ved pole locations on Whale Street, notices ha~in ', been'sent and no objectors being~noted. ,. Mi. Joseph A. Cahoon'dba Joe's variety store Siasconset was ,' granted a renewal of his Soft drink license. Mr. Francis Holdgate wrote relative to various licenses for business he proposed.to operate and the following were approved. Lodging House license for Westmoor Inn.; Common Vict. license for catering parties, weddings etc.; and soft drink license for a pony ride operation as well as a permit to operate a horse and surrey for hire. The Navy wives club was granted a permit for a Bazaar at the rear of the Stetson property N. Water St. on Fri. 3 July or in case of rain on the llth of July. An application from Joseph Cabral Jr. and Antoheo Roderick for a common vict all alcoholic seasonal license at property formerly operated by Manuel Correa, lower orange street was received and voted to take the course prescribed by 1 aw. Mr. Irving Stanley was granted an auc~'ioneers license to be used in~conjunction with activities at the N. Church. A letter was received and filed from Miss Florence S~heppe re-' lative to a sidewalk at her Easy St._property. On recommendation of Chief Howes the following were re-appointed tsp. Police officers, Merwin Blount, Clarence Swift and. Wm. By. H. Snow. -' The Legion Aux. was granted a permit to hold a Poppy Day on 23 M~ 19 59. Voted that the taxistand~on Federal street'be the same as last year and with the same 'regulation relative to only one -. car of any operator being in the stand at a time. The' Coffin School Asso; was granted'a per'it f0r.a tag day on 16 May the birthday of Adm. Sir. Issac Coffin. The following were approved on-application of commander-Elect. M. Machado tO serve on the VFW Fire and Police Patrol;~ Lionel Start, William Gifford, Freemen Lawrence, John Clark Manuel Machado, Waiter S. Barrett, F. W. VanArddale, Byron G. Mooney, Leroy Viera and Roswell Holmes. It was voted that our regular meeting be at 8PM starting next week the 20th of May until further, notice. Voted tO' request M~rwin Blount wire inspector to install a new .' cable and fix the light at the fountain, on lower Main str'e damaged by the Sewer, Force Main construction 'job. Voted to have no loti~ring signs erected at lower main street. Voted to have the town counsel draw up a warrant for the DOg officer. The Board then went into executive Session and adj._ at 10. 30 PM. Voted to request the highway, dept. in its spare time to clem out and dispose of some of the old bldgs at the rear of our Island Home. Letter received from Mrs Mary .Slosek accepting the position of nurse supervisor at Our Island Home at 3500.00 per year starting 1 June. 1959, Voted acknowledge same.
