HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-03-04Selectme~ns,Meeti. ng, 4 March 1959 , "~ , ~ The re~ula'r'meeting'of the Board of Selectmen was held thi~ date at 7.55 PM having been preceeded by'a County Comm- issioners meeting, all members of the Board being present. ~arra6t No '~'9'totalling $71996.22 was presented ~ by Town Acct. ~ Barrett'and checked and approved by the Board. Minutes Of the prevSou~ meeting were read and approved. Mr. L~ncoln Porte, and Mr. Ekank L. Ha~dy of the-American Legion were present and a letter was on hand from the adj '.of the Legion Post requesting that we appoint~ the said Porte, Hardy and George.Hamblin as a committee for the purpose of establishing a memorial to the late James Coffin. Those present suggested that the area at the~intersection of lower orange street, 'and milestone road was a suitable. and this matter was discussed.' It was on motion made and seconded voted to appoint the above men to said committee. The matter of the hearings at the state house on various bills ~ relating to the steamship authority was discussed and it was voted that the Board attend same, leaving here on the morning of rues the 10th so as to be present at the hearings on the llth at 11 AM. ~ It was voted'to request the Ram ,Pasture Ass0. t0 open Hummock Pond on the Clarks Cove:'side as they had offered to do for the town, and alos to have the Mill pond let out so that it 'would drain out it appearing that the weather woulc not becold enough for any more skating. Mr. William W. Price was ~ranted a permit to hold the Sidewalk~ Art Sho~ as in the past on 'Aug. 17,, 18 and 19. A letter was~received from the Fishermens Asso. Suggesting variou duties for the Shellfish Nardne and placed on file at this time. ' ~, -~ A letter was"received~fr'om the Sewer Commission requestino~ithe town'to call a Special Town .meeting and-enclosing a suggest article~for insertiion in same relative to repairign the ~., force ma-~n. ~It was voted to confer with the Town Counsel on this matter before calling said meeting. The following aPplications for'alocholic beverage licenses were received and voted to take the course prescribed by law: Clinfon H..and Agnes M. Murray;A. Preston Manchester dba Upper Deck ~est.; Margaret W. Manchester dba Nantucket's New Ocean House; Hilda A. Allen dba Allens Lobster Grill; ~Barbara V. Schell dba The Boat House Restaurant;and Walter C. ~and Helen'~ -' Hatch'dba Hatch's Package Store. A letter_was received from 'Chie~ Howes 'listing men 'he approved for appointment as Sp. Police and voted approved as recommended. ' ' ~ ' ':~ A letter was received from the town counsel relative to our ~inquiring as to establishing a license fee for places doing ~business in the town, advisng that be felt that the only one.that could be regulated were those as set'out in the general statutes. It was suggested that we determine what ~ these were. .~ A letter was received fr~m Ch,~f Howes ~s~ing that we as~the coo- peration'of the townspeople relative to parking regulations and it was the sense of the meeting that this' appear in the selectmens notes. ~ The Board approved the application of Clarence Swift for an Auctioneers license.
