HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-06-12Selectmens Meeting 12 June i958 The meeting came to order at 8 PM all members of the Board being present. Warrant No.24, totalling $67,325.22 was presented by Town Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Members of the Navy Wives 'club were present with reference to their application for a permit for a street dance on the 4th of July. The problems'envolved in this matter were dis- cussed and the matter was tabled for one week to obtain the feelings of the chief of police. Mrs Charles Swain and Mrs Wadsworth Briad of Union street were present to discuss the matter of proper signs to restrain speeders on Union and other streets: After discussion it was felt the most good might be done if we could obtain signs from the state for erection at varioum highways en- tering town and the boat landing stating that the speed in the town proper was 15 to 20 MPH. Mr. William Winslow shellfish warden was present and discussed the matter of the opening of Sesachacha pond. It was voted to authorize mr. Winslow to contact various bulldozer owners and obtain prices fr~m them and to contract with the lowest bidder to open the pond same to be done under his supervisi, A letter was received from Mr. Harry Norris requesting an area of street to be made no parking, but for his use only. As this is not possible under our laws the matter was filed. A petition for a pole location on Bear street was received from the Gas and ~.lec. Co. and the Telephone Co. and date for hearing set for 26 June 1958. An application for a transfer of funds from the Reserve fund to the Disability Assistance prpgram was received and voted referred to the Finance Committee. ,.~ A letter was 'received from L. Procter relative to litte~"0n the streets and highways and it was vo%ed to instruct the Chief of Police to insert a copy of the-law and penalty for this in the local press and to take whatever steps necessary to aprehend violaters. Mr. Cbs Houston, l~ssee of the camp bldg at the Jetties beach re- quested approval for the installation of a gas hot,,water heater and same was approved. It was votedto carry an ad in the local ppaers that all dogs shoul~ be restrained from running at large from~15 June to 15 Sept, and to have the Town Counsel draw the necessary warrant for the dog officer. Mr. Hull. The School Dept. was g~anted a permit for:the graduation' ball on Frid the 13th from 8 to 1. at the high school auditorium.. The following licenses and permits were granted: S. Killen, Jetties, Common Vici, soft drink; A.F. Syivia permit for a sign at 19 Center Si.; Sankaty Golf Club, per- mit for a Caddy Camp.; Youngs Bicycle shop, soft drink lic; Green Coffee Pot Inc.' The Board was in receipt of a renewal 0f the license from the U.S. Coast Guard to use.the beach area at the Brank point 'reservation, and same was approved and ~.xe~zx~h *.mzm~§mxz~m~z~xz~zB~z~ signed by ~he Board. A request was received from Mr. Rdgar~on~and Mrs Link of Gay for~a no parking area on Gay stree~ and same was referred to ~he SipS. of s~ree~s. It was voted that an area on Pederal street West side from Liberty Lane ~o ~ain s~ree~ be set off as a taxi s~and. The Board having investigated the application of Mrs Claire Maddes for a lodging house license a~ the Chase House on N. Water s~ree~, same was voted approved. I~ was vo~ed to open the comfort s'tations on 15 June 1958. It was voted to advise the Army Eng. that we were in favor of the continued study of the Hussey Shoal breakwater proposal. There being no further business the Board went into executive session and adj. at 10.30 PM' Executive session: The matter of 'the letter of Wm. Waine and'Sons Inc. relative to the exchange of the alarm units at Our Island Home.was dis- cussed and it was voted to'advise that we would be please to meet with them at our next meeting to discuss this matte~ Mr. Meilbye reported that he had examined the Isla~d~Home painting and that Mr. King should be rquested to pair two ~im~m~z do( caseings which he had missed, a window on the east side and oil the steps. It was also voted,to ask if he would give us a pri~e on the painting of the rear jet and,gutter and the back stepsb It was 'voted to have the Su~t. of streets do ~vhatever work nec- essary to make Broad Creek passable at this time, without. attempting to make any permanent road.
