HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-04-17· Selectmens Meeting 17 April 1958 The'meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all members of the Board except Mr..:Pease being present. Mr. Blair served as~Ch.= pro-rem. ,. Minutes of the previous' meet, lng were r~ad'and approved. ~ Warrant No. 16, totalling $16,723.74 was presented by Town Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board. Bids on t~e painting'of the exterior trim of the Island Home ~ were received and opened as follows: · Douglas Lawrence 835.00' 2% ten days Alfred C. Perry 750.00 2% ten days Roger lq. King · 600.00 ' Seddon W. Legg Jr. : 617.21', 2% t'en days Mr. King was the lowest bidder but had put in his letter 'that he was' asking for part payment when. the job was started, on telephoning he was advised that this was not possible and agreed to delete this clause from his bid. On motion made it was voted thatthis job go to the lowest bidder Mr. King. Bids were ~e~ceived and Opened on the sale of old batt~ri~'~at = the central fire station for junk as follows: Thomas McGrath 16.00 John Walsk 27.02 it was voted that ' same be sold to Mr. Walsh. Bids on furnishing a truck for the highway dept. were received - and opened ,as follows: Als Auto Sales and Service 3,055.00; White Whale Chevrolet 2,985.00 both with the trade in of one of'the present ~rks. It was voted that'same be awarded to the lowest bidder White Whale Chevrolet. The Board then discussed the contracts for road work for the to~n f~r the ensuing year; After discussion it was voted that/ Seal Coating be included as~part of the gen~eral contract. ' 10.00 Resurfacing -' 12.50 Taking up sub. port. street 3.00' ~oning 9.00 Seal Coating ~ .56¢ After discussion it was voted that these ~igures be given to Supt. of streets,~Jaeckle to have him outline what the various costs would be to the town based on our estimated work so that we would have some basis to use in determining the lowest bidder and~that we have a special meeting on Monday at 4.30 ~M to go over this matter. Notices were received from the Historic Districts Commission of the approval as to form of sign for Sea Cliff Inn and the Rotary Club and approval to erect same was voted. Mr. Charles Flynn was gr~nted a renewal of' his common vict~li~/ dab the Blacksmith Shop, Broad St. Town. A letter was received from the Planning Board advising that'~hey did not'feel'a bicycle path to the cliff beach along the base of the cliff bluff was practical at this time.~- Applications were received from the Mad Hatter and Sea Cliff Inn for renewal of their seasonal all alcoholic' beverage license and it was voted that the same take the course prescribed by law. Robert Lloyd dba The Sea Cliff was granted an entertainment iic. for week days add Sundays for recorded music. A letter was received from L. R.'-Sellew Dist. Highway Eng, in reply to our letter _urging that the Monomoy,Rd. be completed, by 1 July,, advising that he had writeen the contractor.,to ' this effect and that he had no objection to the sealcoai, ing being done in the fall. A letter was received (c6py) which had been sent to the publicity committee by the Inq. and Mirror commenting on bidding on their booklets and that the towncrier had not delivered same as called for in the specs, same was 'placed on file.., The Board discussed the matter of the meeting held on Monday, at Boston with the U.S. Army Eng. and went over with the press the various proposals and the tenative costs of 'same. The. problem at ,hand was how to best get a consencus of,~the~0pini, n -of the voters as to which of the projects would be best. It was felt that if we could get a smaller plan with an outline by 'the Eng. of~what each proppsal would dOG and its estimate~ cost, that,we could carry this in the press with a slip on which the voters could write their preference and mail in to us, and it was voted to consult the eng. and See if they could provide us with this information.
