HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-08-29Selectmens Meeting, 99 Aug. 195~ The meeting~came to order at 8PM all members of the Board being present, i " Warrant No. 35 totalling $16,29~.88 was presented by Town AcctL Barrett and checked and approved by the Boardy Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mrs Chs. Swain and Mrs Robt. Leske representing Planned Playtime were present and ~iscussed with the Board the matter of an exterior stairway and door in the Comfort Sta. bldg. so that planned playtime could use an upstairs room. They were ad- vised that a set of stairs had been contributed to the town by Albert F. Egan and Sons from the 01d Beach property and that we would go forward and have this work done as ~oon as possible. On the above subject the Board having advertised for bids re- turnable this date before the offer of the stairs was made and it no~ appearing that this work could be done by town forces it was Voted that all bids be rejected and that Mr. John Putterick be instructed to complete this work. Mr. John Keating, Mr. Richard Kotalac and Mr & Mrs Houghton, a Mr Shea and Mr. Edmund Pollard were present and voiced their objections to the town converting the Childrens Beach area into a park, with a bulkhead and small finger piers at the foreshore. As this matter is only in the discussion stage by the Board, said objections were noted and filed. Pole locations for the N.E. Tel & Tel and Nant. Gas & Elec. Co. on New Lane and Bartlett road were approved, abutters having .been notified and uo objections having been filed. The Siasc6nset Casin0Asso was granted a permit for a dance on Mon~ay 2 Sept. extending into Tues at 2AM. A letter was received from Gordon Folger advising that he would take steps to have his hedge on Easton Street cut back and requesting that the town refrain from cutting said hedge. Contracts from the D.P.W. for the maintenance of Ch. 90 roads for the next six months were received and signed by the Boar .. Mr. Manuel Machado was granted a permit to erect a sign at his place of business on Main street, same having been approved as to form by the Historic Districts Commission. A petition was received from~ John Shaw and other residents in the Washington and Francis street area protesting the noise afte: midnite emnating from the Christman Cottages and suggesting that this was a problem for the management to correct rather than to have the residents continually calling the police. It was voted to convey the context of said petition to Mr. Christman and request his cooperatio~ in this matter. A complaint was received from Mr. Richar~'Rostrum lessee of Camp Holiday as regards broken windows and roof leaks and same was referred to Mr. Putterick for attention. Mr. Barrett advised that the buoy off the Humane house on Tuckern' ck would be in place by 5 Sept. weather permitting. ~ It was reported that the sidewalk near the hydrant at the entrauc to the 0AA office was cracked and in need of repair and this matter referred to the Supt. of streets. Mr. William Burdick Sr. was before the board and reported on his work cleaning glass and papers from the Beaches and requeste work with the St. Dept. sweeping streets. stated~ that he' Was oniy 'making $19.00 dollars ~per week and that he needed employment. The Board idscussed this matter but made uo decision at this time. There being no further business the Board 9ent into ex~ecutive session to discuss welfare matters and adj. at 9.45 PM. Welfare: 0u~ Island Home. It was voted to establish a policy that employees of 0u~ Island Home should not be continued iu employment longer than two months after becoming preguantj T~is to avoid any liability £or injury or miscarriage to the town.
