18 July 1907
The meeting came to order at 8 PM all members of the Board being
.present except Mr. Blair.
Warrant No. ~9~ totalling $18,109.1@ was presented by~Town Acct.
Barrett and checked and approved by the Board.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Er. Robert Back, s of the Steamship Auth. met with the' Boa~rd and
discussed Boat line s d~edules it was explained that
Backus was to propose a new schedule at a meeting to be ~el~
on the ~3rd which would have the Nantucket making two trips
daily here instead of one. It was voted to write the auth.
stating that we were behind this proposal 100%.
Er. Barrett asked if it could be ascertained if the auth.~
was being charged for the lighter at the wharf while it
was not being worked, and Er. Pease asked if the warning
whistle could not be sounded l0 min. before departure time
instead of 0 mira. as at present.
Er. Cbs. Sayle and Er. Elwyn Francis were before the Board and
Er. Francis ~complained that people were being driven off
the beach a~t the Jetties by the lessee Er. Cuttle, this
matter was discussed and it was~the sense of the meeting
that we call the'lessees attention to the fact that he has
no exclusive rights in the beach and that it is open to the
public to be used in common.
Er. Halsey and Nr. Stark of the mosquito control commission met
with the Board and discussed the matter~ of the unexplained
hordes of mosquitoes which are making life unbearable iu
various parts of the island. After discussion pro and con
it was felt that this was an emergency which could only be
met b~ an aireal spray program and it was voted to request
the Finance Committee to transfer the sum of $~,000 from ~
the reserve fund for this purpose.
A letter f~om Ers Clement Reynolds with reference to street
lights and trees on Eaiu street in Scouset was referred to
the tree commission for investigation.
On recommendation of Chief Howes, Eichael Scott life guard
.the Sconset Beach was appointed a Sp. Police officer to
serve at the beach only for the summer season.
The Island Set. Co. was granted a permit to erect a sign on Sale
street in the ~og of the Naut. Auto Service bldg. accordi~
to a sketch submitted with request.
A letter was received from the Town Counsel advising that he had
completed the matter of the purchase of the sheep commons
so called and had deposited the deed for recording.
The Historical Society was granted permission to place a small
arrow type sign indicating the direction of the Oldest Hou.
below the Westchester street street sign.
It was voted to have the highway dept. look into the matte~ of
the posts placed at the ends of the small foot paths
tuning between Broadway and center streets iu~ Sconset to
prevent bicycles from driving right out iu front of cars
~ud determine if any needed replacement or relocation.
The question was raised as to the ownership of the raft presentl
at the Childreus beach, and it was determined to look into
this matter.

It ~as Voted to ~write the DPU protesting any increase"in the
water rates and charges iu the town of Nantucket.
It was ~0ted-to insert an add iu the locai papers that driving
of cars and jeeps~on the town be~aches at the Jetties and
Dioness was prohibited.
Mr. Barrett reported that the crab walk at the 2nd bridge in
~!adaket was in need of repairand this n~tter was referred
to the highway dept. "
There being no further business 'the Board went into executive
session and adjourned at 10. PM.
