HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-06-13Selectmens Meeting 13 June 195V All members of the Board Present. Warrant No. ~4, totalling $1~,577.11 was presented by Town Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board, with ~two smal e orre c ti ous Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mr. William Winslow Shellfish Warden was present and discussed with the Board the question of opening Sesachacha Pond, it appearing that ponds were dry and that opening the pond might lower the water table and effect the water of the two Cranber: companies it was voted not to open the pond t~i~.~ear. The matter of installation of Toilets at the Jetties Beach, was discussed and it was voted to have same installed by Stanley Whelden at a figure of $475.00 ind~luding a metal bubbler, and to take any additional monies needed to complete this work from the Selectmens Acct. Mr. Andrew Lewis was granted a renewal of his Junk dealers licens ~Mr. Harold Lindley, Ships Inn was granted an entertainment lic. for recorded music. Mr. Falk ~Nathan was granted a common vict license for the Lucky Pierre with a 9AMclosing limit. Mrs Margaret Manchester was granted a renewal of her Inoholders license at Nantuckets New Ocean House and a Lodging house license at the Ocean House lodge. An application for renewal of innholders all alcoholic seasonal license was voted to tak the course prescribed by law. A notice was received from the Land Court relative to the pet. of one Margaret Yates to register laud at Surf side to the ocean, ~it appearing that her title did not extend to the water same was referred to the Town Counsel to enter our appearanc e. On recommendation of Chief Howes and at the request of the Post office it was voted to allocate a parking space for a Post office truck on the W. side of N. Union street. The photostatic copy of the bill authorizing the town to pur d~ase sheep commons was received and voted referred to the Town counsel to take the necessar~Y steps to carry out the vote of the town. Jessica S. Nixon, Madaket was granted a Common vict. ice cream soft drink and commereicl quahog licenses. It was'voted~to request the merchants to display flags on the 14th Flag day. A notice was received from the DPU relative to applications from Barrett and Towhill and Chase to inlarge their sightsseing bus permits to include Broad street and Steamboat wharf. It was voted to open the Comfort stations on the 15th. A letter was received from the caretaker of the town dump.' Ander~ Lewis quoting figures on bulldo.z, ing and recommending the Naut. Const Co. at a fugure of $8.00 per hr. same was approved, as was a request that the Board ask the Supt. of Streets to cart some fill at the same time as the bulldozing to cover any glass, nails etc. exposed. ~ Y S~l~c ~mens' Me~t -~ng l~ June 5~ PaEe ~. A letter was received which had been se'~t to the H~rb0r Master Mr. Blount from I.S.C.0. advising tha~ a berthing fee of $1~0.00 per season is to'be charged. Inashmuch as we have no ap propria'ti on at this time for this it was voted to take the matter up with'the company for adjustment. It was reported that the shoulder on Surf side rd. near Dias skating rink had worn down so that low cars in turning off road struck on edge,of paved surface. Same was referred to the Supt. of streets. It was voted to have the highway dept. do some work on Cornish Ct. It was noted that a complaint had been~ received that thel0 Min. parking around the Post Office was being violated on Sunday~ by church goers but uo action was taken at this t~me. It was noted that hedges at the corner of summer' and pleasant streets and near the Yacht club made visability bad and encroached on the sidewalk and it was voted to refere the former to the highway dept. and to write a letter to the Yacht club on the latter. The matter of a stop sign at the intersection of Vesper Lane and Surfside rSad was discussed and same was referred to the highway and police dept. for report. It was voted' to' have a white line painted designating the curb area on N. Beach street. The matter of parking on this stree was also discussed and it was voted to have no parking on both sides from Easton to E Lincoln Ave. The Board then went into executive session to discuss welfsr'e matters and adj. at 10. 30 PM. Welfare: The Board met with Mr. Furlong keeper' of Our Island Home and went over various food bills with him. It was the Boards opinion that many economiee could be made without injury to the patients'aud Mr. Furlong was requested to take action to reduce the costsof meats and groceries.
