2 May 1957 --7.30 PM ---All members of the Board present.
Warrant No. 19, totalling $7,99~.53 was presented by Town Acct.
Barrett and checked and approved by the Board.
Minutes of the previous meeting were .read and approved. ,~,"
Three notification forms were received from the Historic District~
Co~mfssion notifying of the approval as to fo~m of signs for
Earl Lowell, Center St. Hardys Pair & Tackle shop, S. Water
street and Manuel Machado Main St.
Thomas Devine Overlook Hotel was granted a renewal of his Inn-
holders license.
~A letter was received from the Electric Cloc.k Products Co. Inc.
inquiring as to the type of service at the Town Clock.
The Islander Inc. was granted a peEnit to sell dairy products
at its place of business Zero Wash. St. Town.
Applications for renewal of seasonal alsoholic beverage licenses
were received from Sea Cliff Inn and Parker Gray and voted
to take the course prescribed by law.
Approval was granted of the transfer of the existing Con, non Vict.
and Juke Box licenses held by Simon Kaufman to The Green
Coffee Pot Inc. Simon Kaufman, Gen. Mgr.
The Board having held a hearing as provided by law at the premise~
on the application of Lawrence Miller for a permit to erect
storage tanks for pertoleL~m products as provided in the
application and having noted the statements pro and con made
at said hearing in its report of said special meeting it
was on motion duly m~de and seconded Voted that said permit
be granted.
Bids were received on ~az-ious phases of Road work as follows:
Gen. Road Contract: Naut. Const Co. only bidder, as follows:
Grading .90~ L. ft. Unit price ~h~iveways $4.50 New Work
16.00 ton. Patching ~2.10 T. Hot mix. 6.00 ton cold mix.
Resurfacing 15.10 ton. 4.00 ton for removing sub. portion
of street. Honing 10.90 ton.
Seal Coating: Naut. Const Co..64~ gal and .8~ per gal with sand
removed: W. Glowacki .~0~ gal and .80 gal with sand removed.
The proposal of the Naut. Const. Co. stated that if they
wereI the successful bidder on the total contract they would grant
a quantity discount of 5% on all work. They being the lowest bidde~
it was on motion made and seconded voted that same be awrded the
Naut. Const. Co. the seal coating to be as under the first propos~
at .6 ~ per gal.
Hoicks Hollow Road Contract. Nant. Const Co. only bidder $16.00
per ton. V_oted.
Nobader Way Contract. Naut. Coust. Co. only bidder, .90 ~ lin.
foot, grading $16.00 ton new work, Voted.
Article 29 Beach cleaning: Bidders Gilbert Burchell Jr. 4.30 Per.
hour, Howard W. Hull 1.95 hr with statement that this was
based on $750.00 for season from 15 May to 15 Oct. George
Haddon $5.50 per hour. After discussion it was voted that
same be awarded to Gilbert Burchell Jr.
Mr. Merw. iu Blount, Harbor master was pres.ent..and requested that
,. th~' Board write the U.S.Army Eng. requesting that anchorage
area Buoy be moved to new location, as shown on section of
chart prepared by him& it was so voted.

The 'matter off,be dolphins damaged by the Navy LST was brought up
and it was voted to inquire into this matter.
Mro Eobert Backus and ¥~.. Norman Giffen, were present 'and pre-
sented a letter from the Steamship Auth. requesting that
the Board write the U.S.ArEy Eng~ reuesting widening of
the channel and it was so voted.
The matter of the~proposed susmner boat schedule was'discussed
it appearing that the authority proposed to run the new
steamer Nantucket into here at 12.30 and lv at 4PM daily
with the Nobska lemving here at 6.15 AN arriving back at 2.3~
PM and departing at 2.45 PM and then arriving back at 8.30
PM. The new vessell with its speed and capacity lying over
here for four and one half hours each day and then visiting
.ever~y port ~on the line except Vineyard Haven. It was voted
to write the authority voicing our protest against this
schedule.
M~ Backus also discussed with the Board the matter of a letter
written to him for transmittal to' the authority voicing ou~
protest as to the lac~ of public bidding on authority Jobs.
After discussion it was voted for the record That the Select~
-go on record to request our authority member to advise the
authority of our position on public bidding of work by the
author i. ty.
The Board. discussed the matter of power hoisting in the taking of
scallops for commercial use the same having been recommended
some time ago by the fishermens asso. On motion duly made
and seconded it was voted to allow the use of power hoists
in the taking of scallops for commercial use with the follow~
conditions: No dredge shall be more than 26 inches wide, V
rings deep, the bag on dredge hot to be more that 18 mesh
long and the complete dredge ~ot to exceed §0 1B~sJ~ and no
dredges to be connected together.
The Board then went into executive session to discuss welfare
matters and adj. at 1~.45 PM.
Welfare: Mrs Man, ice Mullowney, made application for admission to
our island home of her husband for~ the summer season onl~
at the rate of 15.00 per week to allow her to work. The
same was approved subject to her filing a formal applicat
Mr. B~rrett mentioned the matter of sewage or waste wate~
overflowing and running out on the ground at the Naval
Facility and it was voted to write the Cmgd. officer as
regards this matter.
The Board voted to advertise for bids for mason work and
windows at our Island Home same to be in 9 May at 8 PM.
and to also advertise the fact that May 5th thru 19th
was cleanup week. ~
