HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-02-28Selectmens Meeting ~8 Feb. 1957 The meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all members of the Board being present. Warrant~ No. 9 totalling $B~,534.18 was presented by Town Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board~. Ninutes~of the previous meeting were read and approved. ~ Nr. Roy E. Sanguinetti Was present and thanked the Board for his appointment as Town Counsel. It was voted to refer the matter of article 106 the purchase of Sheeps Commons from the. Est. of F.E. Smith estate to the town counsel for title examination and the drawing of the necessary papers etc. ~r. Robert Back~s and Mr. Norman Giffen~ authority member ~nd local agent respectively were present and discussed with the Board a proposal of the authority to run so called package tours, which wou~d include boat trip, a bus trip about the island, a chance to walk about the center and a return trip. While no formal decision was reached it was voted to write the two local bus operators and determine there 'present bus routes and to then forward smme to the authority with any suggestions we might have. ~r. Walter Huffman was present and asked why street light had been moved across the street from its former locatiou near his residence aud also complained about sightseeing busses parking in front of his property in the summer. The Board advised that we would look iuto both of these matters. Mr. ~atthew Jaeckle, Supt. of streets was present and presented specifications for highway dept. equipment to be advertised for bids. On Art. l~ a pickup street sweeper it was voted to have the Supt. get names of Badditional pieces of~equipment ~nd the dealer in this area so that we co,rid request bids from at least three. On Art. 14 a service pickup trk it was voted to adv. for bids same to be in by Art. ll0 pontoon body for ~eed cutter it w~s voted to havre Secy order same from Hockuey Co. I~. T~ipp of the Blue Cross and ~r. Devine Of the Boston Mutual Life Ins. Co. met with the Board and discussed various phase of the contributory life and g~oup hosp. and surgical ins. for ~towu employees. Chie~ Bartlett met With the Board aud discussed specifications f0~ v~rious articles for the Fire~ Dept. as follows: On Art.48 calling fo~ the purchase of a new pumper it was voted that Nr. Blair, Nr. Barrett and Chief Bartlett be authorized as a committee to visit the mainland and look at various equipment at other depts, to.determine jost what we should pu~chas e. Art. 4~ - 4~ - 5~ and pa~t of Art. ~B it Was voted to adv. for public bids. On Art. ~B it was voted to authorize the Chief to purchase the Cyl.block radiator aud pump and batteries. .0n~_rt. 44 and 48 it was vo~ed that specifications be sent ~o ~ustin NcCarthy and Claugherty Co. as well as Amer Fire equipment Co. Bids to be in by l~ Narch 5~. Page 28 Feb. 57 Notice was received from Civil Service that a police entrance exam was being set up and that we would be advised of the da te. Planned Playtime was authorized to hold a well child clinic in April as in former years. A request from the keeper of the dump for some work on the access road to the dump was referred to the Sup. of streets. A p~le location at the corner of Derrymore Rd. and N. Lib. street was approved. Allens Lobster Grill was granted a renewal of its Common ¥ict. license. On application of Chief Howes the following were re-appointed as Sp. Pllice officers: Lincoln-Lewis, Luther Fernald, William Burdick Jr. Stewart Mooney, Thomas Towhill, Charles Handy, Fred Furlong, George Daum, Charles Chambers, Clyde H. Ca~tw~ight~ Robert Blair, E~nest Lema ~Jr. Leonard H. Ellershaw, John J. Caddigan, John Hamblin, Roswell Holmes, Willi~ Gannett, George Lusk, Thomas Gibson, Bernard J. Holmes, Robert Deeley, Eld~ed Gardner, George Wilson Clarence H. Swift. Chief Howes was g~anted approval to have some fo~ms printed to distribute to liquo~ establishemts relative to sales to ~i~o~s. A lett~ was receivd f~om ~. Hesiod ~elative to Sandwich ~o~d and the sewe~ extension to monomoy and voted referred to the Sewer Dept. It was voted to adv. for bids on the new police c~uiser and~ for the heater for the Sconset police and fire sta. same to be in on 14 Ma~ch and V Ma~ch respectively.
