January 1957
The meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all 'members of the Board
being present except Mr. Hurgess.
Warrant No. 5, totalling $9,278.09 was presented by Town Acct.
Barrett and checked and approved by the Board.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
A letter was received from the Finance ~Committee calling attenti !n
to the fact that the Sewer installation on Baxter Rd.
Sconset had not been put out to bids as recommended and
voted.. It was voted to write to the Sewer Commissionrelati'e
to this matter even though'they are an elected body and as
such not under our control.
It was also voted to inquire of them, the size of the pipe
being installed at Monomoy, and why no per, nit was obtained
for the opening of Union street and why same was open so
long.
Letters were received from Dr. T. B. Quigley and Dr. Edward
Shepard protesting the paving of Nonantum Avenue as called
for in an 'article in the annual warrant.
A letter was received from a Vincent Rodin requesting
on obtaining a license for a coffee and ice cream shop. It
was voted to inquire more fully before giving any answer.
A letter was received from the Mass Selectmens Asso. on H. bill
4~7 relative to open meetings of public bodies, and it
was voted to write ~our Senator and Rep. opposing same.
Secy. Glidden advised that he had noted in the Boston press that
two bills pertaining to Nantucket were to come up for
hearings tomorrow morning. One was headed" Have the state
acquire 800 feet of beach !and on eastern Side of Nantucket
Island" and the other "Have DPW clean and improve public
Beaches on Nantucket" Inasmuch as the Board was unaware of
the context of either of these bills, and the only in-
formation was a letter from Rep. Mooney stating that he had
filed said bills,, it was voted to send a telegram opposing
same to the committe of Harbors and Public Lands.
Another bill .to give tenure ,to Supt. of streets, highway
surveyors etc. was discussed and it was voted to w~e
opposing this bill also.
A letter was received from Cmdr. Muss~y through the Harbor Mast
}~. Blount advising that the CG had approved buoys destgnat~
the anchorage area in Nantucket Harbor and that same would
probably be set before next summer.
Welfare:
The Board discussed the matter of medical care of welfare
patients and it was Voted that all general relief patients
must avail themselves of the services of the Town Physician
when a Dr. is needed.
