The meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all ~members of the Board..
Warrant No. 42 totalling $1~,545.27 Was' presented by Town ACCt.
Barrett and checked and approved by the Board.
Minutes of the' previous meeting were ~read and approved.
Mr~.' Coffin asked the Ch. ,to call, ~' .
Sconset to determine if the Dep
Chief was on duty or to find out how many of the call men ~
were available. The matter of the sconset dept. was discusse~
but no vote was taken.
Mr. Haroid Gaillard was present and stated that he was interested
in obtaining a year round license for the Opera House, after
some discussion of license limits etc.~it was voted to write
the ABCC to determine what types if any of licenses were
ava ilable.
The matter Of a deputy shellfish warden was before the Board and
on motion made and seconded it was voted tha$ Elwyn Francis
Sr.~ be' appointed Deputy Shellfish Warden to serve under Ward
Wimslow for the month of Nov. 1956.
Under street openings a list of streets where water mains were to~
be cleaned was presented by the Water Co. It was voted to
request them to make sure that the Fire Dept. was advised
when any hydrants would be out of use.
There being no l~.rther business the Board went into executive
session to discuss Welfare matters'and adj. at 9.15 PM.
WELFARE:
An ap-olication was received for the~admission of Merlin CroCk~
to Our Island Home,'this application was discussed at ~
some length it beiug~the~cousencus of opinion.that same
be approved'upon Mr. Crocker personally signing the~
~application, form. ,- ',-
The matter of a town physician was discussed and it was voted
to write the local medical board and request that they
discuss this matter and submit a name for this position.

SHELLFISH REGULATIONS
COMMERCIAL USE

Section 1. No person shall take
from the waters of Nantucket, Clams,
Quahogs, Oysters, .Eels, or Scallops,
without a permit issued thy the Select-
men as Public Welfare may require.
Whoever shall take from the wa~ers
of 1~antucket, Clams, Quahogs, Oys-
ters, Eels or Scallops without a per-
mit issued by the Selectmen, or after!
said permit has been revoked by the
Selectmen, or whoever for the purpose
of procurring a license falsely makes!
any representation or statement re-.
quired shall be punished by a fine
fifty ($50.00) dollars for .each. offense.
Section 2. The Selectmen shall is-
sue permits as directed in Article 130
of the General Laws of the Common-
wealth of 'Massachusetts.
S~ction 3A.': The Selectmen shall
allow the taking of legal scallops for
~ commexcial purposes during the pc-
riod from November 1st to March
3~st, inclnsive.
Section 3B. Scallops shall be taken
by hand only for family use and not
over one bushel per person per week,
.and not for commercial purposes dur-
ing the month of October..
Section 3C. The use of dredge~
-bween the hours of Sunset and Sun-
rise, and on Sunday, is prohibited
during the legal scallop season, nor
shall scallops be taken on Sunday by
~hand for commercial purposes. -
Section 3D. No scallops shall be
taken under this permit unless they
shall have a well defined raised an-
nual growth line, as provided by Sec-
tion q0 of Cha, pter 130 of the General
Laws, Annotated. -~ ~, ~
Section 4. The use of two or more
dredges connected together by an iron
bar or any similar device ,requiring
the use of power-hoisting devices to
handle dredge or dredges is prohibi-
ted. No dredge or dredges other than
those handled by hand or of greater
width than twenty-eight inches across
the mouth ~vill b~e permitted. No part _
of the foxegoing section shall be con-
stnued to prohibit the use of power
in towing such dredges as specified.
Section 5. Not over four standard-.,
bags (provided by the Town) of scal-
lops shall be taken per man per day,
including shells, and not over eight ·
bags of scallops including shells shall
be ~aken per ,boat per day. This limit
of four and eight shall be interpreted .
as including scallops taken under this
commercial parmit and any family
perxnit. All bags shall be tied securely
in such manner that the top is com-
pletely closed. ~
Section 6.* No clams, quahogs, oys-
ters, or scallops shall be taken by
hand or otherwise from such seed
areas as are now set off or closed by
action of the, Selectmen or from such
areas as may bb set off or closed by
the Selec.tmen during the period these
regulations remain in force. Clams
must measure 2% inches or more and
quahogs must measure 2 inches or
more. ' ~
Section ?A. A first violation of
any of the sections L~vo to six inclu-
sive shall ~be punishable hy revocation
of license for not, more than thirty
(30) days from the date of the Board's .·
action revoking said license. /f said <~
penalty should carry over the end
of the season, the balance of the pen-
alty remaining shall be carried over ~
and 5e effective in the next scallop

Section' 7B. "A' se'c~ond violation of
any of the sections ~wo to six inclu-
sive shall be pffnishable by revoea-
tion of license for one year from the
date of the Board's action revoking '~
said license.
Section 8. The fe~ for license ~o '.

shall be $5.00,
Section 9. As may seem necessary,
and at any time, the above regula-
tions may ,be altered, or new regula-
tions put in force by the Selectmen.
