HomeMy WebLinkAbout1956-06-08S~lectmens Hea~ing 8 Jur~ 1956 Subject: c ompla iht as regards the Fire Chief stating that he had removed hose carts from the village of Sconset which are needed for adequate fire protection. Present: All members of the Boad~, Chief Bartlett,' members of the Sconset 6ompan~, Town Counsel Sanguinetti, and others both from Sconset and Nantucket. Ch. Pease called the meeting to order and requested that the Secy. read the complaints, same was done (see complaint~ attached hereto) He then asked that the opinion of the Town Counsel as regards the powers and duties of the Fire Chief be read and same was done. Mr. Roland I6. Coffin rose and stated that other chiefs had app- ointed a deputy chief in sconset and given him authorit over ,that dept. and then left things to him. Stated that chief Bartlett had not done this but had gone over the Deputy, chiefs head and that consequently the said Deputy Chief had resigned and that this 'had weakened the dept. Mr. Sherwin Boyer asked if what they wanted was the return of the hose carts and the hose on them and stated that if so the hose was no good. Chief Bartlett~ stated that the hose on the Codfish park hose cart was tested ou hydrant on Baxter road near Sankaty light and with just the pressure from the hydrant alone all but two or three lingths leaked badly. Stated that this ho~e was mostly 1911 vintage Ch. Pease asked chief Bartlett what he intented to do with the hose carts, the cheif stated that he did not feel ~it necessary to replace them as the pumper'at sconset had sufficient hose to handle any situation. ~. Hardy asked if it were possible to get the hose carts in operation as soon as a man could get to the engine and the answer was -no- ~. Ernest Coffin stated that he felt the hose carts were necessa~ as an adjunct to the pumper in 'case of a very bad fire and that they could be used to help contorl subsidiary blazes. He also called on all of the~members of the Sconset delegation as to whether or not they were in accord with the petitions and they all stated they were. Mr. Richard Lewis stated he felt that if they had a bad fire the town dept. should be called to held and that uo de~oeudeu¢ should be placed on hose carts. Chief Bartlett stated that with the present low pressures the operation boils down to a tank t~uck operation. Mr. Ernest Coffin stated he felt Sconset had excellent pressure except in the area near Sankaty and the Goldf club. there was various discussion pro and con of various aspects of fire fighting by various presuet. The hearing was adjourned at 9.30 PM uo finding was made by the Board other than it being the sense of the meeting that uo negligence had been proven as regards Chief Bar~letts handling of the dept.
