HomeMy WebLinkAbout1955-08-31.j Selectmens Meeting' 31 Aug. 1955 The meeting came ,to order at 8P~ all members of the Board being present. ~.~ Warrant'No. 35 totalling ~13~90~'.07 was presented by Town Acct. Barrett and. checked and approved by the Board. Minutes of bhe previous meeting were read aud~approved. Town Counsel Sanguinetti was present and rep0rbed on.the Equity hearing in Boston as regards the Boards suspension of ,the license of Nantuckets New Ocean'House, advised that the judge had issued an injunction conditioned on the proprietor Nfs Manchester having a night watchman on th'e premises of the Hotel and lodge from 9PM-to 6 AM nightly.' It was voted to requeste the police dept. to check on this and to offer to make said watchmen a special ~olice officer provided he is~suitable to the chief.'~ Chief Bartlett of the Fire Dept was'present a~d discussed With the Board the matter of permits issued for the storage of volital materials with particular reference to gas tanks and an oil barreli in a way in sconset to the north of property of Nfs Bawden. It was voted to request the town counsel to - advise us as to the status of the way, in question and' the right of the Board or county commissioners to control the use of same. , :. Chief Ba.rtlett'pres'ented Suggested-~egul6tions as to the ,burning of incinerators which were approved by the Board and~ voted to be advertised. The regulations submitted by' the Chief and to be adopted under the statue Uy him are as follows: 1. Incinerators must be of an aoproved type. ~. Permits; ' issued on a yearly basis, will be necessary. Same to be obtained from Chief, Fire Dept. 3.'Location'must be s$itable to surroundings. 4. All,burning shall' be done with due regard to wind and' danger or nuisance ,to abutting property., S. Burning is permitted .only between the hours of ~PM to 7PM. , '!. , A letter was received fP~m the Nant: Island Chamber of commer'ce ~elative to the Courtesy town meeting offering various suggest!( but no action was taken at this ,time.:_ , A letter was re ve$-ved fro~ the Commandant 1ND relative t'o LST's and trucking over town streets, advising that it was n0t~feasab to land on the beach but that'disturbance woud be kept,-to a minimum and that the project should be completed in Nov.~ after which the travel would be ordinary The Nant. Const~' Col was granted a permit to move'a bldg.' on ~daket road,.they to ad, v,ise the chief of police of'exact time. Nfs Edgar EllinEer wrote suggesting'a method of relieveing the traffic on Main street would be to ha~e the chain stores off the street as is done on the Vineyard. Barn-staEes was granted a ~permit f~r a-Sunday ~utertaintm~nt. The New Eng..Tel and Tel and 'the Nant. Gas and Elec Co. were granted a permit to lay an underground cable in Gardner Road. The Board then went into executive session and discussed the following matters: it was voted to approved the admission to the Isi'and Home of Mrs Charlotte T. Batcheler, Mrs McKay to pay Dr. and Hosp. etc. The ~att~r of the~ fall sitting of the' s~per~or c0u~rt was ~ ~ discussed and,the school~ committee having advised ~ that the 'Cyrus ~ierce School would not,be available',it was voted to ~i~ ~advise the Olerk to make arrangemeuts to hold cou.~t in Legit6 Hall. ~. ~,~ ' ,~ , ~ ' '.
