,The C°~lttee was o~ganiz~d "early, last s~er ~d we
investigated as far as~w.e'could ,the problems of the
sqhool, which was a carry-ove~ of other co~tttees.
We c~e 'to the conclusion, as the other co~tttees had
before us,:that a new high school,~,,g~asi~ and audi-
tori~ were needed.... The high school problem tn that
they have no '~tudy hall, not ~enough 'class rooms, the
laboratory for instance has to'be used for a class room
~typewriter room is~solcrowded that th'e-'girls
haven!t enough room to'practice, 'There are many other conditions
that are not good. I think that all of you feel that a new high'
school is needed. ~- ~? ~ ~ ~' ~ ,~ ~ ~ ~.~ ~. ~ ~,
.."The ~situation as far as the gymnasium and auditorium
go~are'.likewise.~ For many years the high school has used Bennett
Hall whtch'is.not-adjacent to the property and which means passing
out of doors~~ They hold opening exercises~at~Bennett Hall, then
go back'~over to the high school, there is thermosetting up of chairs
and the passing back and forth~in no matter what kind of weather.
It is not good.
~ .... ~'~".~' "Then we get d~wn~to~ the'p~oblem~0£ what'does the town
want?m The committee felt.that the town wanted a new high school.
The last proposition had been turned down'last'year by a large
vote because of the campus style and the cost. We started to'
interview~architects, four different architects who were interested
to talk with us. Anderson-Nichols, Mr. Tolman~'Mr.~ Knight for the
airport and Mr. Asan. And of those we felt ~that Mr. Tolman seemed.
to be satisfactory and because he had prepared the plans~for the
Cyrus Peirce School which were practical. He drew us up some pre-
liminary plans and~some sketches but for him to proceed with com-
plete ones we need the moneyJ Until.then~it is impossible for us
to bring~in other plan~.~'Tonight we 'are asking you to appropriate
$4~0,000.00 to build a new high school. If you do so, we will
i~m~e~iately get in'contact with him~and~get some plans for you. to
see. '~You still have the chance to.turn.it down as many times as
you want until you~are thoroughly satisfied with the plans. This
,is what we have done in the past. ~ · ....
~. Many years ago we'employed Leland and Larsen to do
the plans for the'Academy Hill gymnasium and auditorium but they
were.not what the town wanted and we paid out money for those plans.
The' demand' was still being made that we go forward with plans for
a gymnasi~um and'~auditorium,'.but they.were not satisfactory and
not what we ~antedj~,--'.This'gas followed up with plans for reconvert-
in~ the Cyrus P6irce School by the'town'and money was paid out to
Anderson-Nichols and the town voted that down.~.I don't know what
the figure for plans is over the years..~The'last plans were
$~000.00 in round figures'and'the plans before'that $1000.00. It
begins to add to quite a sum of money. If we are going ahead with
this,we shouldn't Continue to have plans drawn~and~pay for them and
bring them'in.~Now, certainly, there~is nothing about this'that
isn't~above board."-~We are asking for $4~0,000~00 and we are going
to bring in new plans for schools we have.'~until you say you want
the school there is no~sense in sp,ending money to bring in plans
you are going to turn down'time after time'and pay fpr~them and'.
still get'nowhere with them. I am not good'~t this~sort of thing
