Holdgate,~Chairma~"Of the Board of'Selectmen, made a motion to delete the sum of Seventy five hundred dollars ($7,500.00) and insert th~ sum of.~Twelve thousand Dollars ($12,000.00..-The motion was seconded by Mr' Ooseph Burgess. Mr; Henry G..~.~. Kehlenbeck, Of Madaket, stated he had a few questions regarding this Article.~'He said that,the matter of,the U.S.C.G. surplus property'became known to the Town of. Nantucket on April 7, 1957. Last year,'the Town was advised that the Madakat land may be" surplus property and there was,some discussion relative.to the Coast'Guard Station for a parking area.:.This past summer, the GSA indicated that.the land was surplus some time in August and within a matter of'90 days, thelTown wanted to appropriate $12,000.00 for 1~65 acres of'land. ~:These three'pieces of land' are the Coast Guard Boathouse,'off Massachusetts Ave.,.~.just'.~ adjacbnt.to New Jersey Ave.,'in Madaket,.and the land is_50' X ... 80' ' There is also some doubt as.to whether the U.S.C.G. has the Title to this land.~.'Secondly,-there is a piece of. land at the end of Madaket Road on the west. If you look for boundary ~,-~'~,~'+~' you cannot find it due.to the erosion which continues.'- ThirdT.there is a piece'of land called Esthers Island end';i.,"'. according to the location, .it is described as being betGeen..;_,~ ~Tuckernuck and Great Point. ~It seems to me.that this lan'dis;. '~not~worth ~12,000'.00. It is my ~nderstanding that the'GSA ~ill~-~ - make'this'land available through agencies for the sum of~$1.O0..' I feel there should be a hearing on this matter, before any--;/.'./~ action is.taken,~and I recommend wa'vote "NO":on~this'Article .~ until.such time that a study can be made or'include this '":.;- ~ Article in the next Annual Town Meeting./;,Mr. Christman'~k~d'- how much land was involved.for.the price of.$12,000.00.' Town Meeting acquiring'this lend'under Park and Recreation--. .regulations ofjthe Government~'~'~We are forced t~ use this land "for just this PUrpose.-. Te.nta.tive~y,. ~e'would'like to have this land ~or a public beach.as Madaket is an area that'is' quite popular for swimming, surfing' etC.,.and we do not own 'too much land on the'shore front .... This property is adjacent ~o what we.now'own and it ~ould be an asset to acquire this. The property'across the Creek,.wh~e the Boathouse building. is, we would like to move this building to the end'of Madaket Road to use as rest rooms for men and women. All the rest of the shore fro'n't.is owned ~'~el~ and there is.no access to it' I'feel it is important this land be purchas~ed to' add to the public beaches. ,,, ~, ,, Mr.'.Dena!d Visco said there is miles of.shore'~front'land. realize that ¢12,00B.00 is a lot of money for a small piece of land. Two acres of land,' in Pocomo, just sold for ¢50~000.00. By all , means, 'I thi~k the voters should accept the motion as presented by Mr. ~enneth Holdgate. :,, Mr. ~ehlenb'eck said he'certainly was' not against 'any acquisition 'of, land in Madaket for any' public use. He just thought we should ~' look at this carefully, and other areas in Madaket which might be available for Town use. 8ince,'any Conserw~tion group can purchase' this 'for, Si.O0 to be_used for'swimming and ~arking of cars. This, is the main point I am trying to make M0derator' Desrocher asked the voters to make a decision on Mr, Holdgate's motion, which had been sedonded. Ail those in favor VOTE saying "AYE" those opposed "NO" The "AYES" have it and it is so voted. ~RTICLE 4 Legal Department. Mr.'christman came before the meeting stating that this mas a ridiculous Article. I feel that ~he ~. Nantucket Boat Line, who have served Nantucket for.twenty years, during strikes, etc. tha~ the Town, as:a Committee,,should own a small'boat area down 'south of.the Boat. Yard and build a public plat'for the'Town and the Nantucket Boat Line. The Nantucket Boat Line paid part of, the cost for.some time to come,' then we could.' acquire a long needed public pier at a third of the cost and the Town would have a public pier for its own use.-Icagree that~the Town-needs money.to defend an action;.but all-Be have to'do is get a ruling from the Attorney 8eneral and there will be no need for funds for legal.action...Nothing will happen about building a pier.in that a~ea,'especially not until after Town Meeting.' Mr 'Christmen's motion has-no ~ bearing on the subject...'Even though Mr.'Ohristman has S'poken on the suit~of the Nantucket Boat Line,~he now asked,to unani~ . mously withdraw this motio'n. If.an Article is laid on the table it is dead.. Mr. Robert Marks,-Ohairman'of t~e Finance committee informed the people that this Article in the amount~of $1~OOO.OO was not intended for what Mr. Christman was talking about. There is a Court cmse against the Town with'Surfside' East Association and Labor laws. We plan to use this money along with what we already have.
