HomeMy WebLinkAbout1967-07-18Selectmen' s Meeting 18 July, 1967 The meet~ng~came to or'der at 8:00 P.M. with all members Of the Board b.eing present. Warrant #30, totaling $101,454.67, was presented Town Accountanl 'Barrett and was checked and approved by the Board. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mr. Thomas J. Devine of the Overlook Hotel was present and pr°'test~ the~making of North Water St. one'way from north~tO south.~ He stated that~he felt it would take traffic away from the hotels and rooming houses in the area and suggested that if .same has to be one way, it should be one way from south to north. Mr. Randolph Sharp, a reSident'of Step Lane, also commented on Center Street being one way and stated that he was a resident of'Step Lane and it would be very'inconvenient for people on Step Lane, which is one way from No. Water Street to Center. Dr. Emile Guba of Lily Street was present along with various other residents of this street and commented on the traffic they felt would be drawn into Lily Street by having Center one way~ Letters were received from Jenny Barnitz, Scott Sterns, Mr. and Mrs Douglas Fonda, Jr., Mrs. Doug Bennett and a telephone call from Mrs. W. Crosby Graham, all on the same matter..Three other residents of Lily Street, along with Lennox Bodman, present and also joined in with Dr. Guba's comments. Mr. A. Preston Manchester, Harold Gaillard, Christian Schell and Philip Read, all operators of alcoholic beverage licensed premises, were present and spoke on the matter of the new State law which al!ows,~at local option, the selling Of alcoholic beverages on Saturdaysnights until 1:00 A.M. on Sunday mornings. They stated, that while this law apparently does not go into effect until the latter part of August,~it is their understanding that communities wishing to do so can. immediately adopt this regulation. 'They stated that it would be a b~g help to all of the licensed premises if they could.~ have this extra hour during the present summer season. 'The Board advised that they wnuld check with the Alcoholic Bevera Control'commission to see if this were possible. Mr. Phil ~Read of the Jared Coffin House also spoke on the~lack of winter directional Signs and stated that they had manY guests at the Jared Coffin House who complained about this~and asked if the Board could dos~something to'correct same. Mr. We§ley Fordyce also was present in behalf of St. Paui's Church and requested a permit to have Fair Street from Lucretia Mort Lane to Main Street cloSed from 10:00 A.M.' to 5:00. P.M. to vehicular traffic on July 27th in:conjunction with St. Paul's Annual Fair. Same was approved by the Board. Selectmen's Meeting i8 July, 1967 Page 2 Mr. Mason L. Thompson was present and presented, a letter to ~he Board requesting the Board take all~approPriate~action tO see that the existing access ~r0ad which now.crosses Nobadeer Slough be preserved when the runway'~extension is constructed. Mr."Thompson stated that in the~event this access'road were. cut off, it would necessitate all property owners to the east having'to travel approximately 2½ miles~further tO reach properties than at present. The Board discussed this matter at some length and voted to send a letter to.Senator Kennedy and Representative Keith,'asking them to intervene in the Town's behalf with reference to having the~=unway,extension constructed to the northeast as originally voted bytthe Town. Howard L. Crise,~3r'd and Peter V. Taylor was granted'ia Permit to ~. ..change the hours of the dances at Legion Hall to 9:00 P.M. tO midnight rather than 8:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. Gilbert S. Nickerson was granted a renewal of his'Taxi Permit. The Board was*in receipt of contracts for clinics.with the Connty Hospital and same were executed by the Board. A letter was received from Robert Caldwell'of Harbor Fuel Corp. requesting that.the Board give'serious Consideration to changing the parking on India Street to the south side rather' ,~than the north where'it is presently allowed. He stated that the utility poles are on the south side of'the street and vehicles parked on the north, it is~very difficult at times for oil trucks and other large vehicles to pass~' ~This ~atter was taken~under advisement. . The Board approved the Sunday~entertainment'permit, for~juke box ~and orchestra entertainment at Nobadeer Restaurant, Inc.. The Board~executed a Seal-coating contract in the amount of 45 cent per.gallon with Glowacki Construction Co. A~c0m~laint was received~from the Police Dept. as regards Discover· Playhouse on No. Liberty Street, and it was voted to write a letter to the.licensee, Mr. William Ritchie, Jr., warning 'if additional complaints were received, their license would revoked. A complaint was received ~elative to James~Garnett using' property on Hooper Farm Road for the depositing of newly opened quohog shells which caused a nuisance in the neighborhood, and it was'~voted to write Mr. Garnett on this matter. There being no further business, the Board went into Executive ~ Session and adjourned at 11:00 P.M. S~cretary
