The meeting came to order at 8:05, being preceded by
Warrant No. 31 totalling $19,098.39 was presented by T°wn Acct. Barrett and checked and approved by the Board.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Mr. Halsey Keny was present in behalf of the sidewald art show Committe~,'and
requested permission to hold the art show at the band stand on Straight
Wharf on'Aug. 15-17. Same was voted approved.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Aloes, Mr. Frank Hardy, Mr. Leon Royal, Mr. John
Eddleton, Mr. Lester Ayers, and Mr. and Mrs. Van Pelt, appeared before
~ the Board and opposed the granting of a Conma. Vict. and entertainment
licenses to Mr. William Schustik at MidJ Pearl St. Nant.. Mr. Shhustik
was also present and explained to the Board and those present w~at his
plans were for the operation of this business and stated that he did not
feel it would cause any disturbance to the neighborhood or neighbors.
Letters from Miss Hilda Edmonston, William Mason and Sue A. Fischer
were received in behalf of granting the licenses reguested by Mr. Schustik
Mr. Robert Mooney, Esq. appeared for Mr. Schusitk and stated that he
felt there was a need for this type of operation and if the Board were
concerned as to the noise etc.' that hhey might be willing to give the
matter a try for the balance of this season. 'This matter was taken
under advisement and later in the meeting voted not to approve the
application.
Mr. Thurlow W. Barnes was present and stated that he owned the land on
Commercial Wharf Street over which the 6as and Electric Company had an
easement of approximately 15 ft. in width, that he understood that the
Town would be taking this area for a Public Way and that if t is were so,
he should be relieved of his tax obligations on this land. The Beard
advised Mr. Brown that we would look into t is matter. Mr. Brown also
requested information as to why the flags at the Veterans E~Ex graves
in Pros'. Hill Cemetary were removed and Mr. Brown was advised that we
would contact the Veterans graves caretaker and ~etermine an~ answer to
his question.
Upon request of. Chief Howes, Harr~y. B. ~Mers was appointed as Special P0~ice
to serve at the Steamship Authority Wharf.
The Board also received nob~ce of the resignation of John Grangrade as
night watchman at Our Island Home, effective 5 Aug and it was ~oted to
accept said resignationj Mr. James Gardner wrote, reguesting transfer
from the 'Highway 'Dept. to the night watchman,s position at Our Island
Home and smme was voted approved. ~ ·
Mr. William schusbik was granted a permit to hold a Folk Singing Concert at Bennett Hall on Sun., 7 Aug.
Mrs. Hall, house mother at the yOUth hostel at Surf Aide was present and
requested permission to erect .2 signs at the corner of Pleasant and Main
Sts. and at the corner of At. 'Ave. and Pleasant~t. with the initials
AYH and an arrow so as to direct hostileers t~%he Surf side area.
The Board stated that they would take this ma~t~r up with the Historic
District Commission, ~nd advise. ~
One bid for.~.the remodeling of a portion of the School building at Sconset into
a fire station was received from John Santos Sr. in the amount o$
$5,7OO.00 and same was
Mrs. Carl Rowe wrote relative to the Road ~ndtbjL%~he~ preservation of the
moores and this matter was referred to the Zoning Study Comm
Mr. Robert Sandsbury was appointed deputy harbor master to serve it the Mad-
aket area..
It was ~voted to erect a 10 min.~ parking sign from 8 AM to 6 PM at the bakery
~rty of Jack Ramos on Orange St. It was voted that Lower Main from
Washington to i.~Candle on the south side be marked No Parking.
There being no further the Board wentiinto executive s?~sion and
