HomeMy WebLinkAbout1966-07-27 Selectmen' s Meeting, 27 July, 1966 = ' The meeting came to order atI 8.-00 PM, all members'of the Board being present. Warrant No. 30, totalling $76,252.06 was presented by Town Accountant Barrett and checked and approved by the Baord. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Stoddard H. Melhado and William Schustik were present and presented a request for a permit to gperate an old style cider house at 7 India Street, ,~an- tubket. STATED: ", It was their intention to serve soups, breads, cider, and other soft drinks and for entert'ainment to be folk singing and story- telling snngs by Mr. Schustik and possibly others. Mr. Robert Mooney, Esq. Presented a petition in behalf o~' SchuStik and Melhado, and Mrs. Margaret Kelley was present and spoke in behalf of ~ having the Board gra~ these lecense~. It was voted to table this matter for one week. ~ Mr. John Santos Sr. was present and presented specifications for the Board's consideration at the Sconset Fire Station. · It was voted to advertise this matter for bids,' same to be in next weeks meeting. Mr. Gordon Folger and Mr. Thomas Divine were present and complained that duriDg the recent electrical failure they made personal inspections of some~.of the other Hotels in town and were reporting that they found the generators in 2 of these places not>~to'be ~ operating and that another had not. yet had its emergency lights installed..The tenor 'of their . complaint was that if they had to comply with re~lations with regards the emergency lights at a certain date, that it only be fair that all of the operators be made to c ~omply with same regulations. ~ The Board advised that we look into this matter and see that these were taken care of. A letter was received from one Bernard Gelles comPlaining that he had come to the Overlook Hotel asking to be shown a room, after having rates quotad to him and that the operator disappeared from the desk and failed to return. ' He sbated he felt this was unlawful discrimination un- der the Civil Rights Act, andfelt the Board should take some action as regards this matter. Mr. Divine, who was present, stated that Mr. Gellus had ne~er, asked tb~be shown a room, that he ha~ merely asked for the rates, ~which were given to him and that he had no other knowledge as regards this matter. -~ .~.~ ~' .. Mr~ Ralph Ha~dy ~was present and requested that th~ ~Bo~rd 'take some action to erect ~either a slow sign or a stop sign at the junction of Hummock Pon~.~ Ro'ad~-?Somerset Road, and Vesper Lan~. The Board advised that we would look into this matter and take whatever action necessary. Mr. and. Mrs. Donald Allen, Cecil Richrod, Mr. and Mrs.' Hibb0tt' Conrad, and Mrs. Donald Allet Jr. were present and protested having the Letion Carnival at the First National area near their properties.~,, Mr. James K~llen, Chairman of the Legion Carnival Committee was present and advised that that he was withdrawing his application for a permit at the First National grounds and was makind application for a permit :for the Carnival to be hald at the Boy's Club property at the corner of Williams" Lane and Lower Pleasant Street, and also requested permission to have three house trailers temporarily on the sight during the Carnival. Motion made, and seconded, it was voted to approve b~th of these requests. Mr. Donald Allen was granted renewal fo his soft dr~lk license at his Sparks Avenue property. ~enewal his. taxi permit and same was voted Mr. Irvin Holdgate was g~anted Notice of complaint was received from the Alchoholic Beverage Commission on The Nobadeer Restaurant and A. Preston Manchester dba Upper Deck and Bosun's Locker, the Board set a date of 2 Aug., at 8 PM for hearing on these matters and nitice to be sent the said parbies. W~s '~ceived from Bernard Gellus that Charles W. Ellis had, according to Mr. Gellus, refused to do work for him snd had been sassy, the contents of this letter were noted and placed on file. Mr. Jessie Elderi~dge' Was appointed caretaker at the Sconset Dump to fill'~t~he unexpired term of Rolland M.. Coffin who has resigned. . Mr'. William Schustik was granted a permit for a Folk singing Concert at ' Bonnet Hall on 30 July, 1966. " ' .... ' '" ;and race cream' Ann J.
