motorscooters and rented them. ~He felt that the noise ce~ be ~l~-;'~
inated if those people ~o rent them would put mufflers on them., He
stated that a few years'ago there was a law in Massach~etts.that re-
quired a person~to have a motor ~v~icle drivers license in orders'to ~
operate a motorcycle or scooter. ~ Now, ,the rental businesses will put ~ ~
~ ~ybody~on that motors~0ter if he has that doll~ even if he doesn'$~
j know'an~ing about them.~ ~. Christm~ felt that the'Act shoed ~re-~.1
quire~a license to drive one which ~uld~also' include the loc~ people.

people taken to the hospit~ as. a result of motorscooter accidents.'~.%~J~
He also felt that the local people"~o.use them s~ould put mufflers

· rental .business sprang up/and we wa.nt ,to control the~ thi6g but the' Legis-
lature didn't go along with covering the whole of Nantucket.~, Mr.' Dinnis '
felt that perhaps if it were acceptable andllegal~' perhaps we~ could make ~?~,L.!~
some sense out of:the situation by controlling the scooters in the Historic
District. · This is better than what we have now as people cannot use them ~
and back 'to,where it required a special'license t'o operate themJ~?O~er some
period of time it was decided that the end result would be putting those who

have the power~to license people who do business in Nantucket.' .,,If a~rson
comes to Nantucket to rent scooters, they could put a curfew on his business

would not involve the tactics that we have before us right now and still~
